Cross Cultural Communication

Learning Outcome(s) Assessed: (1) A clear understanding of major topics regarding culture, globalization, and the communication processes resulting from such interaction. (2) Being able to make practical use of this knowledge, finding potential applications for it to business-related situations.

Description of Assignment: The student is expected to write a 2,000 essay on one (or more) of the topics covered in the syllabus. This entails that the essay can be written on any of the topics and not just those covered up to Week 5. Nevertheless, students are encouraged to discuss their choice with the instructor, so he can provide them with adequate materials and suggestions beyond the readings appearing in the syllabus. The format of the essay is open to preference and should be discussed with the instructor, but it can range from a critical reading of one of the texts to the application of some of the theories appearing in the readings to real-life situations.

What makes a good assignment?):

*Use of the theory (variety and depth): The students must demonstrate their knowledge of the theories and authors studied throughout the course. However, a mere repetition word-by-word of definitions and arguments provided by these authors will not suffice. The students must show that they have attained practical knowledge of the theory, being able to apply it to topics that go beyond the scope of the readings. That is to say, the students must prove assimilated the theory, making it their own. In this respect, the students are expected to relate various aspects of the topic of their essay with the concepts, theories, and authors that they have studied. Understandably, if a student relates a particular aspect of the topic to a single theory, the analysis and critique of that character must be done in greater depth than if it had been related to four, five or six different theories. In other words, the depth of the analysis is inversely proportional to the amount of theories used in it. However, every relation established by the student must be adequately justified and explained. It is not enough to say “and here we see the relation between this topic and the theories X, Y and Z”: How does that theory relate to it? Why can we establish a connection between them?

*Originality: In relation with the previous point, the students are expected to provide an original analysis and critique of the topic. Providing a list of relations between several aspects of it and different theories does not suffice. The essay must be original; and, consequently, the students are expected to combine different theories with their own insights in order to build arguments to back their claims and offer an original and intriguing narration to the reader.

*Arguments: Every connection between the topic and the theory must be argued. Students are expected to build arguments, not statements. Articles of faith or declarations such as “I agree with it because it is true”, “because that’s the way it is”, or “humans are good/evil/etc.” are NOT arguments, and thus using them as if they were will be severely penalized.

*Clarity and structure: The exam must have a clearly defined structured, and must written in an understandable manner (university level)

Adverse Trend and Data Management

Read the following case study regarding an adverse trend in a health care setting.
An elderly patient has been admitted to the medical/surgical unit from the local nursing care facility. The new lab results in her electronic health record (EHR) indicate that she has methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in her urine. She is placed on contact precautions per the hospital guidelines.
The health care provider arrives to examine her new patient and inquires about the need for contact precautions. The nurse explains the lab results reveal the patient has MRSA in her urine. The health care provider states that she reviewed the patient’s lab results in the emergency room and the urine results were normal. The unit coordinator reveals to the staff nurse and nurse manager that this is the third incident this month of lab results being uploaded to the wrong patient’s EHR when admitted from the emergency department.
Write a 1,050 to 1,400-word paper based on the case study in which you:
Analyze the adverse trend, including how it affects patient care.
Evaluate the data that needs to be collected, reviewed, and applied in the decision-making process to address the adverse trend.
Evaluate the information system methods that will be used to collect the data needed in the decision-making process, including the source(s) of the data.
Evaluate the information technology and tools needed in each step of the decision-making process.

Individual Project Plan

As a culminating project, this assignment has two parts: an executive summary and a project plan created in either MS Project (PC) or Apple Merlin (MAC). Those experiencing problems with Project software may complete this portion of the assignment in Excel. Use prior course information and data gathered for your CLC Business Plan to complete this assignment.
Write an executive summary of your CLC Business Plan. Executive summary provides a complete, concise overview of all phases of the proposed project. Needed information is presented cogently, providing the reader with a comprehensive understanding of the project. Style is engaging and fresh, capturing the reader’s attention. Presents a compelling case for the project’s usefulness.
Write a project plan in Microsoft Project or Apple Merlin. Excel may be substituted as needed. Plan is comprehensive; all requirements stated in the assignment criteria are present. Numerous useful and interesting details are included. Demonstrates a high level mastery of converting a business plan into a project plan.
Examine your CLC Business Plan: Extract the distinct activities needed to start up the business: (a) Identify tasks needed to complete the project. (b) Develop a completion schedule. (c) Assign resources to project tasks.
Be creative. For example: If your plan calls for three nurses, you will need to plan for hiring, and training. Create arbitrary timelines for each activity. They could be very general (2 weeks to hire, 2 weeks to train) or they could dive much deeper (1 week to write hiring ad, 1 week to place ad, 2 weeks to accept applications, 1 week to review, 3 weeks for interviews, 1 week for offer-letters, 2 weeks to establish in HR system, etc.). Do this for each section of the CLC Business Plan.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.
