Adolescents/Young Adults Borderline Personality disorders

CLIENT INFO SHEET (CIS): According to a 2011 Pew report, 80% of internet users have looked online for health information (Fox, 2011). Depending on the creditability of the source, clients and their families may be consuming information about psychological or psychiatric issues that is inaccurate and scary. This assignment is intended to add to your “clinical practice tool box” and to help each of you to translate scholarly clinical information into user friendly/consumer friendly terms. Many clients need us to be able to explain psychiatric diagnoses and clinical interventions in NON CLINICAL BUT CREDIBLE ways.
 Each student will select a topic and have it “approved” in advance in order to avoid duplication. Each student will create a one page, double sided, CLIENT FRIENDLY information sheet about a mental health diagnosis, a treatment intervention, or psychotropic medication.
 One side of the handout will contain information geared towards explaining the topic to parents.

The second side will explain the concept to a child (you decide the age range but it should be clearly noted).
 The CIS should combine and synthesize information learned in class and in required readings, as well as, information gathered from independent research.
 A minimum of 3 sources should be used – sources should be scholarly, professional, and/or reputable. References should be noted in APA on the footer of the CIS.
J. Pepperman Summer II, 2014 SSWG8803

 The CIS must be consumer friendly–
o it should be accurate, but not scary;
o it should be strengths based and empowering/encouraging/hopeful;
o it should be thorough but not overwhelming;
o it should tell parents, especially, where they can go for more information or support;
o it should help kids to know what to expect.
 BE CREATIVE. Use color, graphics, and pictures if you know how in order to make it eye catching and clear. A picture is worth a thousand words.
 (I have access to a 3rd grader and an 8th grader who are both willing to critique the friendliness of the kid side.)
 CIS SHOULD BE USEFUL because the Client Information Sheets created by each student will be posted and available for everyone to use in their individual practice long after class is done.

Data Collection

Begin Data Collection Mini-Project
At the end of this course, you will submit a Qualitative Research Plan incorporating the skills and techniques you have learned. In order to help you prepare for this research plan, you will first complete a data collection Mini-Project that you will submit in Week 9.
This week, you will begin your Mini-Project by developing an appropriate data collection tool. You will test your data collection tool and provide interview questions and field notes.
To prepare for this Application:
• Based on the research questions for the qualitative research plan for this course, develop an appropriate data collection tool and find 3-5 participants in class, if possible, or from the list of students in other current advanced qualitative research courses, who you can interview in order to test the tool. The advanced qualitative research course student list was posted in the announcements during week 2 and encompasses students from across the University currently taking the course
.
• Before you test it, predict what patterns and themes you expect to emerge from the collected data. On what do you base your predictions?

The assignment:
• Provide the interview questions and protocol.

• Provide field notes for each interview.

• In 3–pages:

o Summarize the responses to the questions.

o Analyze the responses. Is this the information you were hoping to generate from the questions? If you are not getting the data you want, what needs to change?

o Evaluate the overall effectiveness of the interview questions and protocol you developed. Where can the questions or protocol be improved?
