Science in the Media

Science in the Media
There is nothing like reading a good book or watching a great movie for a little escapism and entertainment. With all of the television channels out there and access to the internet, you can watch just about anything you want at any time. In Unit 2, you talked about the science involved with technology, but in this Assignment, you are going to turn the tables and delve into how the media portrays science.
How does a pop culture portrayal of science and scientists impact the average person’s view of what science is and how research is conducted? Can what is presented by the media affect how the general populace views a particular research field? What might the long-term impacts of such a depiction be? These are just a few questions that you will reflect upon in this Assignment.
Your paper should address the following questions:
1. When you hear the word “scientist” what do you envision? Which famous people or characters from the media come into your mind? What characteristics do they have in common? Discuss at least three characteristics of your vision of a scientist.
2. Has your image of what a scientist does and how they look changed over time? If so, how has this changed and what influenced you?
3. Are fictional scientists usually the heroes, villains, or a combination of the two? Provide at least two detailed examples to support your position.
4. How is science portrayed in fictional media (television shows, movies, music, books, etc.)? Is it seen as a positive, negative, or neutral force in the world? Give specific examples supporting your position.
5. Do you think the portrayal of scientists in the various forms of media influences how society views people in this profession? Why, or why not?
6. Can the portrayal of science in media influence how certain research and technology is viewed, and accepted, by the general public (e.g., cloning)?
Your Final Project should be written in an essay format, with an introduction and conclusion. The paper will require you to include details from research including the course materials and sources you locate on your own. Use APA format to cite your sources of information, both within parenthetical citations and also within a reference page at the end of the project.
Basic Writing Expectations:
• A minimum of 1500 words, not counting the title or reference pages
• At least 3 academic resources utilized
• Include a title page, double space, font size 10 or 12
• Include a highly developed viewpoint/thesis, purpose, and exceptional content
• Demonstrate superior organization: use logic
• Free of grammar and spelling errors
• No evidence of plagiarism. Note: no more than 10% of your paper should be direct quotes
• Use the APA style for all in-text citations, references, and body of paper

Developing a Plan of Action

Section: Removing Barriers (3 pages)
In this section, you will design a formal step-by-step plan for removing barriers to change and providing employees the necessary tools to empower action toward your vision. Outline the tools you will need and specify the necessary resources.

Also include the following in this section of your plan:
o Identify structural barriers that could potentially prevent employees from feeling empowered to change and describe how you would remove these barriers.
o Identify the necessary training for employees to be successful with this change.
o What changes would be needed to align current systems to the new vision?
o What is your plan for dealing with potentially troublesome supervisors?
o Describe how your plan empowers others and discuss the benefits of employees feeling positive towards the change process and feeling empowered to participate.

Section: Generating Short-Term Wins (1 page)
As you consider ways to create short-term wins, complete the exercise on quick wins presented on page 140 in the course text, The Heart of Change. Include your answers to the exercise as part of this section of your Plan of Action (uploaded with order).
After narrowing your list down to the top five, use the “Quick Wins Diagnostic” from the article “The Quick Wins Paradox” (attached with the order) to evaluate the potential impact of the items on your list.
Next, respond to the following:
o Which item do you think should be given top priority in creating a quick win?
o Develop a plan for creating this win. Outline the steps you would need to take to help this plan succeed.

Section: Consolidating Change ( 1page)
Forces that work against the change process—such as complacency, resistance, and structural barriers—never disappear. However, following Kotter’s eight-stage process can mitigate these forces enough for a new culture to form. Organizational culture is important because it affects the behavior of individuals within it—when you change the culture, employee behavior will continue to change as well. For example, think about how an organization’s culture impacts the way it recruits and trains new employees. It would be difficult to ensure lasting change if the organization continues its hiring practices based on a former way of operating. Cultural change comes at the end of a long process, a continuum of meaningful quick victories that finally results in lasting change. Kotter’s eight-stage process is not meant to be accomplished quickly, but, rather, it is a step-by-step process that is structured to ensure continual motivation, enthusiasm, and worthwhile results.
In a 1 page paper, develop a plan for the consolidation of short-term wins into the production of more change. Be sure and consider each of the elements in Exhibit 2, “What Stage 7 Looks Like in a Successful, Major Change Effort,” on page 150 of the Leading Change course text. Include the following in your plan (uploaded with order):
o How will you maintain the sense of urgency?
o Once you have achieved short-term wins, what is the next set of changes that should be addressed? How would you approach these changes?
o In what ways are you structuring the changes to avoid trying to address too many changes at once or pushing others too hard?
o How would consolidating your wins bring others on board and build confidence in your vision?

Section: Anchoring New Approaches (1 page)
For this section of your paper, you will need to consider the culture of your organization. As you make the changes you have outlined in your plan of action, there are likely to be areas where the new changes will conflict with existing cultural standards and traditions.
In a 1 page paper, describe how you plan to make your changes permanent. Include a discussion on:
o What will be the greatest obstacle to making changes permanent in your organizational culture? How will you address this?
o What are methods you can use to keep employees informed of the progress and effects of changes?
o How can you continue to have buy-in for new changes?

Include a conclusion to this paper. Include a minimum of 6 APA resources.

Is animal testing necessary?

Is animal testing necessary? (MY RESPONSE IS NO)

The Formal Research Paper will be a culmination of everything you have learned about your topic thus far. Your Final Research Essay must meet all of the following requirements:
1. Your essay should address a specific audience.
2. The essay must include a thesis statement, which explains clearly the purpose of the essay. It should be obvious from the thesis statement which “side” of the issue you are taking. Your argument can be structured directly or indirectly.
3. Your essay must be a persuasive argument. You should consider all you have learned about argument, and focus on convincing your audience your view is correct.
4. You should draw your own conclusions and incorporate your opinion into this essay. However, all opinions should be backed up with fact. You should not make any assumptions or judgments that are not backed by your sources. You should avoid the first person in academic writing such as this paper.
5. While the majority of the essay will be catered to your “side,” you must also show the “other side” or the counterargument.
6. Ethos, logos, and pathos should be balanced. Be sure that you do not commit fallacies from the fallacy cheat sheet.
7. Your essay must have a strong introduction and conclusion. We will have talked about methods to create strong and creative introductions and conclusions in class.
8. Your essay must have solid main points. All main points must relate to the thesis statement and must be backed up by outside sources.
9. Your essay must be entirely in one proper style format, either MLA or APA. This includes in-text citations for all facts and ideas not your own, proper quotations and paraphrasing, proper paper setup, and an accurate and complete list of bibliographic information as dictated by the style guide of your choice.
10. You must include a minimum of ten sources in this essay. Each source should clearly relate to your focused research topic and thesis. It will be beneficial for you to use the sources you collected for your annotated bibliography, but you are permitted to use additional sources as well.
11. Grammar, mechanics and punctuation must be correct.
12. Your discussion should engage the audience and be interesting to read.
13. Your essay must have an engaging title.
14. Conclusion should include a “call to action.”
Incorporating images into your text can be a wonderful way to help guide the reader though your argument. This is not a requirement, but a great option to engage your reader and create visual interest. These images must reinforce the points you are making in your paper— be sure the image is not there solely to take up space. Each image/graphic should be treated as a quotation of an outside source, cited and explained as a textual quotation would be.
Your essay must be double-spaced in a legible font: MLA and APA suggest 12 point Times New Roman font. The margins should be one inch. The final draft of the essay must be 12 pages long. If you are using APA, neither the title page or abstract count toward the page minimum (although they are numbered). Similarly, the Works Cited/Reference page(s) also does not count towards this minimum requirement.

I would like to address your Biblical perspectives this week. Please always remember your Biblical perspective should be something more than a footnote added at the end of your papers or discussion postings. It should be fully integrated into the body of your work. This is the aspect of all your assignments which will help you develop a more Biblical worldview in this course. If you simply provide a line of scripture at the end of your submission, you really are not including a Biblical perspective or using the material to learn more in regard to the Biblical aspect of our studies. Always strive for complete integration in this regard. Doing this is a learned skill, but once you master it, all of your work, in this class and all future classes, will be much stronger!

MARKETING- Advertising & Promotion

CW2 Guidelines

Coursework 2 guidelines (below) are made available to all teams in learning week 14. Unless changes have been agreed with the module’s leader, CW1 teams will progress to CW2 using the same list of members as well as their CW1 chosen brand.

At this stage, each prospective client (Buxton, AVON, Travelodge, etc.) has agreed the Advertising Plan proposed in CW1 – subject to minor changes as outlined in the CW1 feedback document – and hired each of the pitching agencies for the 2012-2013 marketing year.

Your CW2 tasks, therefore, are to build on CW1 and prepare a formal written and well integrated plan for your client’s 2012-13 Advertising/Promotional/Web activities, as follows:

Section 1 – The concise situation analysis.
Submit a 1-page executive summary of your CW1 situation analysis. Your client already knows this information so you need only one page for this. If you undertook relevant primary research to support your original situation analysis, you should include this research as an Appendix at the back of CW2.

Section 2 – The revised advertising plan.
Based on the CW1 feedback provided by your client (played by your Tutor), you need to carefully review and summarise all major aspects of your Advertising Plan (CW1) on 2-3 pages at the most. Remember to include CW1 ad media scheduling information and ad budgeting details as Appendices to CW2.

Section 3 – The promotional plan.
Drawing on the module’s post-Christmas lectures and seminar exercises, and also on the expertise of the seminar tutors, each agency needs to develop a concise Promotional Plan (try not to exceed 6-7 pages for this plan). Develop this plan as a well-supported 12-month London-based promotional campaign. Remember that you may need to focus on B2C, B2B or both.

Promotional Plan essentials:
• Clear identification of desired outcomes (promotional objectives)
• Clear description of customers to be targeted (B2C and/or B2B)
• Outline of your chosen consumer-oriented promotions
• Outline of your chosen trade-oriented promotions
• Communication considerations
• Budgetary considerations
• Scheduling considerations
• Logistical considerations
• Legal considerations

 Remember to show that all of the dimensions above actually harmonise well with the Advertising Plan you developed for CW1.

 All campaigns run (check module booklet) a Promotional budget of £2,000,000 maximum.

Section 4 – The website makeover.
As a final step, your agency needs to provide your client with ideas for a website makeover. This makeover may simply involve a somewhat light touch’ or, conversely, you may wish to recommend a substantial review of the current site and its features. At any rate, you are only required to provide your client with an overview of the improvements your agency would like to propose and, importantly, how you would like the Advertising and Promotional ideas you propose for 2012-13 to be integrated into the client’s Website during that year. You need not worry about the costs associated with your proposed Website makeover because your client has agreed to deal with these costs separately.

 To assist you with exploring Web makeover possibilities, Middlesex University has purchased and installed a powerful yet easy-to-use suite of software tools available in lecture room C-114, PC lab C-104 and on most PCs in the Sheppard Library:

• Serif WebPlus (with ready-to-use templates)
• Serif PhotoPlus (image manipulation software)
• Serif DrawPlus (artwork from scratch)
• Serif MoviePlus (motion – for the more advanced)
• Serif PagePlus (logos, tiles, captions made easy)

please use and reference Integrated marketing communication in advertising and promotion by Terence A. Shimp as this he main core text book.
