Who is Wonder Woman?

We have been looking at the ideas and symbols that Wonder Woman stands for, both for her and for society. She represents an idea of justice, honor and truth and yet she is willing to give all that up to be human. Circe on the other hand, is willing to take all that that Wonder Woman seems to want to negate, take it and do something with it. In fact she accuses Wonder Woman of not doing her job and not being who she is supposed to be.
For this essay you are going to look at both Wonder Woman and Circe and write a compare and contrast essay.

Wonder Woman is supposed to be the representation of justice and the protector for women all around the world. Circe argues that she is not, and takes away her powers. Who do you think is a better protector of women around the world? Why?

The paper must be 6-9 pages minimum, you may write more but no less than 6 FULL pages, must follow MLA format and use the graphic novel as a main source. You must utilize at least three more secondary sources to support your ideas but you are welcome to use more. Remember that your essays must utilize at least two of the theories we discussed. You may use all three, but you CAN NOT turn in an essay without using any of the theories

DC Theory

This assignment will be presenting on the topic of Divine Command Theory (Hinman text, Chapter 3).

Don’t skip the Hinman text but feel welcome to go beyond it and take a look at the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy or elsewhere.

And take a look at the Assessment Guidelines for the Ethical Theory Presentation to get an idea of what I’m looking for in terms of grading criteria.

The broad goal of this project is to push you to sink your teeth into an ethical theory and get a good understanding of it. Then to push you to engage with what your classmate’s present about other theories and get a basic understanding of some of those theories through seeing their presentation but also through asking questions and really engaging with the discussion.

Description

You will work with one to three partners to present one classical or contemporary ethical theory. Your goal is to “teach’ your classmates about the theory.

Specification

Your presentation needs to summarize the main ideas of the theory; the main theorists associated with the theory, and the major criticisms of the theory.

You will post the presentation on the due date in the Discussion Topic called Ethical Theory Presentations. Use the subject line to say the title of your Ethical Theory Presentation. In your message, tell us the names of the members of your group. Attach the presentation.

You may post your presentation as a PowerPoint, a WORD document, a PDF attachment or just post it in the message screen. Be succinct – summarize! Length should be no more that 10 – 15 slides or 4 – 5 double-spaced pages.

Process

Each presentation group will have a private discussion topic and chat room to meet and plan your presentation. You will be given readings from the textbooks to summarize as the basis for your presentation, but you may need to do a small amount of supplementary Internet research, for instance, to find a picture of the theorist.

utilitarianism

Mill advocates a utilitarian framework for ethics wherein an activity is ethical if it maximizes utility. Thoroughly explain mill’s principle of utilitarianism and what it entails. From the perspective of morality, what do we look at to determine whether an action is good and why? How does Mill account for justice as a moral requirement that is “higher in obligation” than others? Do you think that there are any potential problem with utilitarianism? What might these be and how they be resolved? What, in the end, is your assessment of utilitarianism?

sex gender

Sex and gender have been theorized in a variety of ways. As we know, one way gender can be theorized is as a socially constructed set of rules and norms in society. Simone de Beauvoir’s infamous quote “one is not born, but becomes a woman” highlights this way of understanding gender (de Beauvoir 1952:249). In this view, the process of gendering is a social process.

In this assignment, you will closely examine a text for meanings related to gender. Beginning by looking at de Beauvoir’s standpoint, you will argue that gender is (or is not) a social construction. To do this you will analyze lyrics from the Dar Williams song When I Was a Boy. By engaging with the lyrics of this song through close reading you will create your own analysis about gender.

Do you agree that gender is a social construction in the way the songwriter has written? To deeply analyze this text you will apply (at least) five course readings we have discussed in class to the song lyrics.

You will formulate a thesis that persuasively and coherently connects the theoretical paradigm(s) introduced in class to your close reading of the lyrics. You must support this thesis with solid examples drawn from the lyrics and texts you are discussing.

To do this:
First, you will need to do a close reading of the song lyrics. You will then work to connect these lyrics directly to the course readings. In your essay, you will use the course readings to support your analysis of the song. Your essay needs a clear point of view, starting with a thesis statement or question that guides and structures your essay.

All papers are to be typed in 12-point Times New Roman font, double spaced, with one inch margins, and stapled. Page numbers should appear on each page. The paper must have a title that reflects its contents and a works cited page. All quotes must be cited.

When I Was a Boy
Dar Williams
1993

I won’t forget when Peter Pan came to my house, took my hand I said I was a boy; I’m glad he didn’t check. I learned to fly, I learned to fight, I lived a whole life in one night We saved each other’s lives out on the pirate’s deck. And I remember that night when I’m leaving a late night with some friends And I hear somebody tell me it’s not safe, someone should help me I need to find a nice man to walk me home. When I was a boy, I scared the pants off of my mom, Climbed what I could climb upon And I don’t know how I survived, I guess I knew the tricks that all boys knew. And you can walk me home, but I was a boy, too. I was a kid that you would like, just a small boy on her bike Riding topless, yeah, I never cared who saw. My neighbor came outside to say, “Get your shirt,” I said “No way, it’s the last time I’m not breaking any law.” And now I’m in a clothing store, and the signs say Less is More More that’s tight means more to see, more for them, not more for me That can’t help me climb a tree in ten seconds flat When I was a boy, See that picture? That was me Grass-stained shirt and dusty knees. And I know things have gotta change, They got pills to sell, they’ve got implants to put in, they’ve got implants to remove But I am not forgetting…that I was a boy too. And like the woods where I would creep, it’s a secret I can keep Except when I’m tired, except when I’m being caught off guard. I’ve had a lonesome awful day, the conversation finds its way To catching fire-flies out in the backyard. And I tell the man I’m with about the other life I lived And I say now you’re top gun, I have lost and you have won And he says, Oh no, oh no, can’t you see When I was a girl, my mom and I, we always talked I picked flowers everywhere that I walked. And I could always cry, now even when I’m alone I seldom do And I have lost some kindness But I was a girl too. And you were just like me, and I was just like you.

“The Godfather” movie and the Sicilian Mafia

We are supposed to respond the the following statement:

Note that the director of The Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola, has even said that he consciously treated the Mafia as a symbol for US capitalism: “I always wanted to use the Mafia as a metaphor for America. If you look at the film, you see that it’s focused that way. The first line is “I believe in America.” I feel that the Mafia is an incredible metaphor for this country… Both are totally capitalistic phenomenal and basically have a profit motive.”
