unit 4 mac

As this is a relatively simply assignment, we will be working on the letter to the editor for one unit only. The paper will be due at the end of Unit 4.

Purpose:

How many times have we heard someone complaining about something happening in our communities–but offering no solutions for the problem? This assignment is designed to develop your problem-solving skills and engage you in a substantive conversation concerning a current local issue. This assignment will also encourage you to begin seriously considering your audience as a writer. When you are writing a letter such as this, you’ll want to consider who will be reading it, particularly in terms of what words, examples, facts, or appeals might best convince this particular group.

The Assignment:

* Write a two to three page (double-spaced) letter to the editor, proposing a solution to a current local problem. List the newspaper to which you would be sending this to at the top of your paper. Begin the letter with: “Dear Editor,” Throughout the paper, be as specific as you possibly can in terms of:

1.) Defining/describing the problem and who it affects

2.) Describing your solution

3.) Defending your solution as the best means of dealing with this problem

As you’re writing this letter, also do keep in mind your audience.

Book Review

Instructions: Get a copy of any edition of Bernard Edelman’s Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam. (Careful if you’re ordering online, there is a movie by the same title.)

Look at the table of contents, you will see that the book is divided into eight sections. Begin by reading the introduction in its entirety to give you some context. You will then pick and read five letters from each section of the book, for a total of 40 letters. Don’t just pick the shortest ones – you won’t be doing yourself any favors. You’ll want to skim all the letters and pick the ones that have some depth to them.

Assignment: Your goal is to use these letters as a window into what the average soldier faced during his service in Vietnam. What impressions about the war do you get through reading these letters? Are these soldiers supportive of the war? How do these letters “evolve” as the war progresses, and what does that tell us about the nature of the Vietnam War?

Write a four page reflection paper in essay form. (Double-spaced, 12pt font, 1 inch margins.) You’ll want to engage with these letters and make an argument of your own about what they teach us about the experience of the Vietnam War, don’t just summarize the letters.

Citations: If you’re directly quoting any of the letters and need to cite them, simply cite the name of the letter’s author and the page number of the book the letter can be found on.

Compile an Annotated Bibliography

ctivity: Compile an Annotated Bibliography—-a paper comprised of at least 40 annotated bibliography entries. 85% of which must be from the past five years.

Length: 150-250 words per entry

An annotated bibliography describes and evaluates literature on a topic in a collection of succinct, one-paragraph entries. There are two important points to know about an annotated bibliography.

1. Bibliography entries must be based on a critical examination of studies. Just because an article appears in a peer-reviewed journal does not mean it is without flaws. An annotated bibliography entry that does not evaluate the merits of the research and its relevance to your purposes is of little value.

2. Researchers often refer to their annotated bibliography when writing literature reviews. If you do your annotated bibliography with care and skill, it will be invaluable, as you can use it to create your literature review, saving much time and effort. The other assignments in this section are premised upon this idea.

Compile an Annotated Bibliography
This assignment requires you to compile an Annotated Bibliography of 40 entries, 85% of which must be from the past five years. Each annotated entry must concisely summarize key aspects of a study—participants, purpose, research design and methods, data analysis, key findings—and include a thoughtful evaluation of the significance of the study’s findings and conclusions as they relate to your topic. In order to write quality entries, you must understand each study—what the researchers did, why they did it, and what they found and concluded.
All of the entries should be relevant to your goal of developing a research problem that contributes to theory in a topic area and to designing a study that addresses the problem. Organize the entries thematically into roughly the following categories:
• Seminal Articles
• Theory
• Issues and Debates
• Key Findings
• Designs

You will probably want to add categories specific to your topic area, and you may modify the recommended categories to organize the entries in a way that makes most sense. Be sure to include works that provide alternate or opposing perspectives on the proposed topic area in order to demonstrate unbiased research. Focus particularly on works that address main ideas in the field, describe areas of controversy, and indicate areas of incomplete knowledge and relate to your envisioned study’s problem, purpose, and research questions. It may be helpful to create a spreadsheet of the studies in your topic area, which includes, among other things, the constructs studied, how the constructs were operationalized, and the findings. Sometimes having the summary information all viewable at one time helps identify a problem. Include historical and germinal works as well as current works.

Hint: Don’t neglect dissertations and theses. They often have excellent reference lists.

This bibliography will become the Appendix to a Concept Paper. It will support the problem statement and literature review. It will provide models and ideas for the design of the study. Do not rush this assignment.

The activity should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.
