Testing Theory

(This paper has three sections.)

There are ways to test a theory: deductively, inductively, and by mixed methods. Deductive theory testing requires measuring or observing (usually quantitatively) for theory confirmation and generalizing across various contexts. Inductive theories are derived through observation and more qualitative ways. Additionally, there is the mixed-method strategy that can be used to test theories, both inductively and deductively. This Assignment will let you use theory testing to study, test, and evaluate the development theory you select for this Assignment.

***The three theories I have selected for this assignment are: The Teleological Motor; The Life Cycle Motor; and Evolutionary Motor

1) Organization Development Theories: A Summary– ?Give a brief summary and comparison of selected elements of at least 3 of the change theories presented in the readings for this module. You might feature elements that are similar or those that are different among the three theories you discuss. Summarize the nature of the organization you have chosen to focus on for your Course Project and the positive social change you are seeking to bring out. Then identify and summarize one of those theories which you will be using for this Assignment. Briefly state why you think it would be a good lens through which to view the organization you are going to be studying for the Course Project and useful model to design steps in seeking positive social change in the organization

2) Theory Testing:? You have learned a formal process for testing a theory. If you have not, please look at the Optional Resources to refresh your memory on this topic. Use the Module 2 Resources and your scholarly lens to evaluate the theory you have selected, including tracing the antecedents/history of the theory; referring to research that supports the value of the theory; providing examples of how the theory has been used in the field of OD, what propositions or hypotheses are assumed by the theory; what variables, elements, or features of an organization the theory focuses on; what assumptions are made regarding consequences of interventions and implementation of change processes (i.e. how are independent and dependent variables related); and what assumptions might be embedded into the theory about how practice will further inform theory.

3) Evaluate Theory Value and Success: ?Evaluate the anticipated successes of your change theory in making a difference to your organization. What might be the benefits of using this theory with your organization? What challenges/pitfalls should you consider in applying this change theory to your chosen organizational setting? What might you take into account as the internal or external consultant seeking to use this theory as a lens? How might your application of this theory be a "test" of the theory?

Resources/References for this Assignment:

Gallos text:
• Chapter 5, "Kurt Lewin and the Planned Approach to Change: A Reappraisal." Focus on this contemporary view of Lewin’s seminal research and practice which included field theory, group dynamics, action research, and the 3-step model, in comparison to Cummings and Worley’s simpler portrayal (Ch. 3).
• Chapter 12, "Teaching Smart People to Learn." Focus on Argyris’ discussion of theoretical concepts of "single loop" and "double loop" learning as they have been used in his research.
• Chapter 7, "Action Research: Rethinking Lewin." Focus on the fundamental goals of action research and how this chapter encourages readers to rethink Lewin’s work presented in Chapter 5 and how it compares to Cummings and Worley’s (Ch. 3) discussion of action research.
• Chapter 9, "Toward a Theory of Positive Organizational Change." Focus on the emerging ways of understanding organizational outcomes and the area of scholarship that is built upon the theory of appreciative inquiry. Compare this chapter to Cummings and Worley’s (Ch. 3) discussion of the Positive model.

CheckList (Just a Checklist):

Use the following criteria to examine the theory you have chosen to focus on in this module:

• Does the author identify one overarching theory by name?
• Does the author provide information about the development of this theory?
• Does the author give examples of how the theory has been used previously?
• Does the author advance propositions or hypotheses that are based on the theory?
• Does the author provide empirical evidence to support theoretical propositions?

Comparative politics analyzing a country and the democracy regime or authoritarian regime

This assignment is for a class of comparative politics which a branch of political science. Throughout the semester in this class, we were examining how political leaders facilitate, and respond to, the need to modernize national economies, balance the interests of different social groups, and develop and reform the institutions of government. We saw how different social and economic conditions promote different paths to economic modernization and political development.

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTION
A list of countries has been given for the assignment and you should only choose ONE for the assignment.
This paper will examine a country that has made, or is making, a transition from an authoritarian regime to a democracy. You will discuss why the country is making that transition, what the problems are with that transition, how they could be overcome, and what the likelihood is that your country will emerge as a democracy.
In order to do this you must define your terms. What is an "authoritarian regime"? What is a "democracy"? Do not look in the dictionary for a definition of democracy. Think about the variables that characterize democracies. In other words, ask yourself how a democratic regime can be distinguished from an authoritarian regime. The Third Wave(book) by Samuel Huntington provides some useful ideas about evaluating whether a country is a democracy. Next, you must evaluate whether your country is, or is becoming, a democracy. Make this evaluation as a political scientist. Explain why your country was not democratic and why it made a transition toward democracy. What were the forces that promoted democracy and what forces threaten democracy? Use the theories from the readings and class discussions to evaluate how others would view your country, reach your own conclusions, and defend your conclusions against possible objections. If you make a well-reasoned argument, whether or not the professor agrees with your conclusions, you will get a better grade than if you just give the recent history of your country, or if you just state what Marx or Huntington would think. Finally, use your argument to predict what problems will emerge in the future and, ultimately, whether your country will make a successful transition to democracy. The paper doesn’t consists of narrating the history of the country you choose but should demonstrates the evolution of the concept of democracy if the country has become democratic or should analyze the authoritarian regime and demonstrate why the country is not democratic and the likelihood of the country to become democracy.

Short Essay: Individual reflective essay

This essay is intended to get students to reflect on their own experiences with social theory and social policy. Select a specific state policy that has had direct impact on you as a student and as a citizen. This may involve state policy towards tertiary education, welfare, employment, recreation and sport, immigration, and even defense. Locate the policy in a specific historic and political context, and analyze it using social theories and concepts introduced in the first four weeks of class (globalization, Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Frankfurt School). You are also encouraged to draw from other recommended readings for this unit to frame and analyze your narrative. (minimum of 6 references)

Your analysis should foreground 4-5 key theoretical concepts and relate these to a specific historical and institutional context. The institutional context here also relates to how public policy (role of the state) is maintained and contested by different political and normative concerns reasoned through social theory as well as social movements and popular protests in civil society. A broad tentative title: Theory matters : private concerns and public policy.

Just 1500 word limits (excluding reference list at the end/including in-text citations)
