Final Project and Oral Presentation: The final project will consist of both a term paper (approximately 2000 words in length) and an oral presentation (15 minutes in length) with power point presentation (10-15 slides). The final project (paper and oral presentation) will require students to identify and articulate a focused research question where there is clear evidence of American Philosophical Pragmatism at play in the arena of politics, economics, art, etc. Examples of real world events in the history of America are, but limited to, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Sexual Revolution of the 60’s, the Oil-Shock of the 70’s, etc., where the philosophical position of Pragmatism was clearly exhibited in the decisions and debates surrounding the event.

Case Study – Frank
Frank is an elderly man with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). In his counseling session, he presents with concerns about dealing with the progression of his illness and uncertainty about his future. He lives alone and until the progression of his illness, was active at the local Veteran’s Affairs center. His wife passed away prior to his being diagnosed with ALS. Frank has been on an experimental drug trial for some of the symptoms of the disease that seemed to help at first, but his symptoms have increased.

Frank thinks his quality of life is poor right now because of the advanced state of his disease, with his daily symptoms including muscle weakness in his hands, arms, legs and the muscles of speech, swallowing or breathing twitching and cramping of muscles, especially those in the hands and feet impairment of the use of the arms and legs. His thick speech frustrates him and he avoids calling friends. He has shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing and swallowing and he sleeps with the aid of a respirator, without which he would not be able to breathe on his own.

At the end of the session Frank says that he has appreciated talking and that it has helped him to look at everything he is facing in his life and what his future holds. He says that after listening to himself, he has decided that it makes the most sense to stop using his breathing machine at night and let the disease “runs its course”. He does not want to schedule another session, and says he feels much better already.

She has been very busy with two upcoming presentations and a consulting job she had taken on in the middle of the year. She has talked with one of the other counselors, named Gloria, about her difficulty keeping up with her outside obligations and her counseling caseload. Stacy is paid based on how many client hours she bills. Gloria suggests that Stacy spread her counseling appointments out over several months. Concerned that she would have to do without the income, Stacy said that did not seem possible. Gloria told her that she was in a similar situation and spread out her caseload, but continued to bill Medicaid and two other providers. Stacy thanked Gloria and returned to her office. Your administrative assistant overheard the conversation and reported it to you.
