External and Internal Evironments

Choose an industry you have not yet written about in this course, and one publicly traded corporation within that industry. Research the company on its own Website, the public filings on the Securities and Exchange Commission EDGAR database (http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml), in the University’s online databases, and any other sources you can find. The annual report will often provide insights that can help address some of these questions.
Write an eight to ten (8-10) page paper in which you:
1. Choose the two (2) segments of the general environment that would rank highest in their influence on the corporation you chose. Assess how these segments affect the corporation you chose and the industry in which it operates.
2. Considering the five (5) forces of competition, choose the two (2) that you estimate are the most significant for the corporation you chose. Evaluate how well the company has addressed these two (2) forces in the recent past.
3. With the same two (2) forces in mind, predict what the company might do to improve its ability to address these forces in the near future.
4. Assess the external threats affecting this corporation and the opportunities available to the corporation. Give your opinions on how the corporation should deal with the most serious threat and the greatest opportunity. Justify your answer.
5. Give your opinion on the corporation’s greatest strengths and most significant weaknesses. Choose the strategy or tactic the corporation should select to take maximum advantage of its strengths, and the strategy or tactic the corporation should select to fix its most significant weakness. Justify your choices.
6. Determine the company’s resources, capabilities, and core competencies.
7. Analyze the company’s value chain to determine where they can create using the resources, capabilities, and core competencies discussed above.
8. Use at least three (3) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not quality as academic resources

Ethical Systems and ME

What a busy five weeks we have had! We have learned to use moral reasoning and examined many ethical theories in this course. These include virtue ethics, utilitarianism, social contract, deontology with goals (Hinduism and Buddhism), deontology with divine authority (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), relativism (individual and cultural), and deontology with a categorical imperative (Kant).

Think back about your impressions of each of these ethical systems and write a 1,000 to 1,250-word essay that addresses the following questions below. Be sure to write good introductory and concluding paragraphs in your essay.

Summarize the principle components of each of the seven ethical systems studied in this course (listed above), including the principle ethicist involved in developing the system. Use two or three sentences for each ethical system.
Which ethical system is most prevalent in the United States today? In the World? Explain your answer and support your response.
Which ethical system most closely matches your personal ethical system? Why do you think so? Explain your position.
Please give a short, personal example that supports your decision to identify your ethical system (3 or 4 sentences) and explain why it does so.
Examine your response to previous assignments in Modules 1 thru 4 in this course. Are there any inconsistencies or conflict between positions you took in earlier assignments and the ethical system identified in this paper? For example, monotheists (Christians, Muslims, and Jews) believe in universal maxims. Relativists do not think universal maxims are possible. One cannot, for example be a Christian and believe no universal maxims exist, which is a relativist position. Monotheism (Christianity) and relativism are polar opposites. If inconsistencies exist between your earlier answers and this paper, how do you resolve them in your ethical decision-making process in the real world?
Add at least three references to support your analysis in this paper.
Post a 4-5-page (1000-1250 -word) paper to the M5: Assignment 1 Dropbox by Saturday, February 1, 2014. Include a title and reference page (not included in the 4-5 page count). All written assignments and responses should follow citation rules for attributing sources using APA format. Please use Microsoft Word spelling/grammar checker before submitting your essay.

Advantages of Collaborative Online Teams

Online collaborations help to eliminate many challenges associated with tradition groups’ collaboration that bring together people in one room. These challenges include cancellation of meetings because of time incompatibility, poor communication among others.

Features of online collaboration such as teleconferencing solve distance problems and eliminate some of the traditional group challenges. First it reduces travel cost that team members would incur in traveling to a common meeting place.Secondly the time recovered by reducing travel time to meeting location can be used more positively in group activities. Web conferencing also allows greater interactivity among team members and therefore reduce distractions (Higgins, 2007, 1).

Another feature of online teams’ collaboration that offers a great advantage is instant messaging (IM). Through this feature it is possible to have real time communication. It is therefore possible for team member to chat with one another and know who is not connected. In addition members can chose how many members to chat with at a time. Advantages that can be acquired include immediate response and therefore time saving. In addition members can also maintain the size of their inbox (Higgins, 2007, 2).

Effective and Efficient Teams

A team can be able to attain efficiency objective if each member knows his roles, play it well and generally there are no delay in group performance. Larson &LaFasto1989 discussed several characteristics of an effective team. Competency in team members is one of the characteristic described and that can help a group to be efficient. As a team member you are supposed to know your role in the team and also how to fulfill the group’s expectations (9). Members require training to develop the necessary knowledge to be able to achieve the expected objectives. This can be realized by having external collaborations. Another characteristic that can help a group to be efficient is principled leadership. These are respected members of the team, person/s who demonstrate selfless effort for the common good of the group. They use the respect to cultivate similar selflessness in the group.

However, being efficient does not translate to being effective. There must be a motivation for individual member to feel like a team. This is where characteristics such as a unified commitment, comes into our mind. There should be a commitment towards the team and elimination of self. Having a team goal can be a good starting point. Through the team goal it can be easier for leaders to develop a climate of collaboration in the team.

Characteristics of Effective and Efficient Team Members

Experience that a team member brings into the team is an important attribute to show his effectiveness and efficiency. These are people who have faced the challenges and understand the cost of failure. In short they bring to the team analytical skills in problem solving as well as abundant technical knowhow.

Larson &LaFasto 1989, also talks of openness and supportiveness as characteristics of effectiveness and efficiency (11). Every team member is supposed to chip in his ideas for the common interest of the group. Encouraging diversity of opinions helps to build team trust. It also helps to bring perspectives that have not been considered to come to light. Each team member feels like he is a part of the team as opposed to an alien. Every team members is therefore able to trust others and speak his/her voice (Bakken, 2001, 3).

Coaching Tips for Participating on Effective and Efficient Teams

  1. Having clear expectations, this is where as team members there is a clear understanding of the team goals.
  2. Commitment in the team is the next tip. Here we look at the team members’ view about the organization and its importance. Like by being a member of our team, one will be able to learn more and share what they know.
  3. Team should bring in the right people into the team by analyzing potential members levels of competencies.
  4. Team members should also be positive to criticism. Retaining the openness we discussed and avoiding arguments.

Using 800-1,000 words, discuss methods to evaluate the effectiveness of your proposed solution and variables to be assessed when evaluating project outcomes.
Example: If you are proposing a new staffing matrix that is intended to reduce nurse turnover, improve nursing staff satisfaction, and positively impact overall delivery of care, you may decide the following methods and variables are necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of your proposed solution:
Methods:
1. Survey of staff attitudes and contributors to job satisfaction and dissatisfaction before and after initiating change.
2. Obtain turnover rates before and after initiating change.
3. Compare patient discharge surveys before change and after initiation of change.
Variables:
1. Staff attitudes and perceptions.
2. Patient attitudes and perceptions.
3. Rate of nursing staff turnover.

CORRELATIONS

CORRELATIONS

You will complete this assignment using the DAA Template.
Read the SPSS Data Analysis Report Guidelines for a more complete understanding of the DAA Template and how to format and organize your assignment.
Refer to IBM SPSS Step-By-Step Instructions: Correlations for additional information on using SPSS for this assignment.
If necessary, review the Copy/Export Output Instructions to refresh your memory on how to perform these tasks. As with your previous two assignments, your submission should be narrative with supporting statistical output (table and graphs) integrated into the narrative in the appropriate place (not all at the end of the document).
You will analyze the following variables in the grades.sav data set:
gender.
gpa.
total.
final.
Step 1: Write Section 1 of the DAA.
Provide a context of the grades.sav data set. Include a definition of the specified variables and corresponding scales of measurement. Indicate the type of correlation for each X, Y pair (e.g., Pearson’s r, Spearman’s r, point-biserial r, et cetera). Specify the sample size of the data set.
Step 2: Write Section 2 of the DAA.
Test the assumptions of correlation for gpa and final. Paste the SPSS histogram output for each variable and discuss your visual interpretations. Paste SPSS descriptives output showing skewness and kurtosis values and interpret them. Paste SPSS scatter plot output with gpa set to the horizontal axis and final set to the vertical axis. Conduct a visual inspection of the scatter plot to analyze other assumptions of correlation. Summarize whether or not the assumptions of correlation are met.
Step 3: Write Section 3 of the DAA
Specify a research question related to gpa and final. Articulate the null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis. Specify your alpha level.
Step 4: Write Section 4 of the DAA
Paste the SPSS output of the intercorrelation matrix for all specified variables.
First, report the lowest magnitude correlation in the intercorrelation matrix, including degrees of freedom, correlation coefficient, p value, and effect size. Interpret the effect size. Specify whether or not to reject the null hypothesis for this correlation.
Second, report the highest magnitude correlation in the intercorrelation matrix, including degrees of freedom, correlation coefficient, p value, and effect size. Interpret the effect size. Specify whether or not to reject the null hypothesis for this correlation.
Third, report the correlation between gpa and final, including degrees of freedom, correlation coefficient, p value, and effect size. Interpret the effect size. Analyze the correlation in terms of the null hypothesis.
Step 5: Write Section 5 of the DAA
Discuss the implications of this correlation as it relates to the research question. Conclude with an analysis of the strengths and limitations of correlational analysis.
