Include information from at least one library and one Internet article to support your responses for each section. Section 1 – Perspectives View the prison overcrowding situation from the perspective of the criminal justice role you are most interested in, and address the following: How did the character in your chosen role view the situation differently from the characters in other roles? What more might the character in your role need to know to further identify problems? What are the biggest challenges the character in your role faces in the prison overcrowding situation? How might the character in your role prioritize proposed solutions differently than other roles (such as the need to uphold prisoners’ rights and human dignity vs. public safety)? Address the following: Provide a brief analysis and summary of the solutions. Explain why you chose these three solutions. Identify ethical considerations related to developing solutions to prison overcrowding. How viable is the solution given for the problem, and how would it affect your character’s job? Identify challenges that your character will have in implementing the solutions. In your paper include the following: Title page. Introduction. Perspectives section. Solutions section. Conclusion (that brings all main points together and reaches a final conclusion about the issue). Reference page. Select one of the three ethical scenarios for this assignment. After selecting your desired scenario, consider the questions included for that scenario.

Instructions View the media piece, Ethical Issues in Criminal Justice, linked in the Resources. Select one of the three ethical scenarios for this assignment. After selecting your desired scenario, consider the questions included for that scenario. Scenario #1: Municipal Jail All criminal justice professionals work with sensitive information. Others find the information interesting, and the criminal justice professional must keep private information private. After viewing the scenario, consider the following: What are the benefits to the jailer in sharing the information? What are the possible consequences of sharing the information? What might the detainee’s reaction be if he discovered that the jailer shared the information? Within the context of the above questions: Identify the importance of ethics for the practitioner working in the jail. Describe how, or whether, the ethical dilemma could have been avoided. Explain the consequences that could occur as a result of decision making and various courses of action. Scenario #2: Traffic Stop Officers are often faced with situations that relate to persons in positions of authority or involve a conflict with their personal feelings. These situations require the use of discretion and objective decision making. After viewing the scenario, consider the following: From the perspective of the officer, what would you consider in dealing with the council member? From the perspective of a citizen, what would you expect of the council member? Of the officer? From the perspective of the officer’s supervisor, what might you expect the officer to do in this situation? Within the context of the above questions: Identify the importance of ethics for the practitioner working a traffic stop. Describe how, or whether, the ethical dilemma could have been avoided. Explain the consequences that could occur as a result of decision making and various courses of action. Scenario #3: Gated Community When criminal justice professionals are given authority and discretion it may be tempting to abuse the authority. Criminal justice professionals are often placed in a position of trust and must be programmed to do the right thing when no one is looking. After viewing the scenario, consider the following: As the security officer considers using the golf cart, what factors must be weighed in her decision? How might the owner of the golf cart view situation if the security officer used the cart without permission? How might the other residents view the use of the cart by the security officer if they became aware that she did not have permission? Within the context of the above questions: Identify the importance of ethics for the practitioner working in a private security capacity. Describe how, or whether, the ethical dilemma could have been avoided. Explain the consequences that could occur as a result of decision making and various courses of action. Your paper should be a 400–600-word essay. Compose your essay in the format detailed below, and be sure to include the following in your essay: An introduction. Clearly labeled headings. The importance of ethics for the criminal justice practitioner. Description of how the ethical dilemma may be viewed from multiple perspectives. Explanation of the consequences that could occur as a result of decision making and various courses of action. A conclusion. Requirements This section appears at the end of each set of assignment instructions. It provides the specific details of expectations for the assignment. Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message. Font and font size: Use Times New Roman, 12 point. Length of paper: Write a short essay of 400–600 words (approximately two pages), double spaced.

Should marijuana be legal for recreational use?

This final assignment is designed to involve all of the main skills that you have learned during this course. In particular, your paper should demonstrate the ability to construct a deductively valid or inductively strong argument, clearly and accurately explain your reasoning, use high-quality academic sources to support the premises of your argument, fairly and honestly evaluate contrary arguments and objections, and identify fallacies and biases that occur within the arguments or objections presented. You will continue to build on the option you chose in your Week One Initial Argument Paper. You will need to research a minimum of three scholarly sources from the Ashford University Library. (For further information about discovering and including scholarly research, take a look at the FindIt@AU Tutorial instructional resource.) In your paper Explain the topic you are addressing and your position on it. Provide a preview of your paper and a statement of your thesis in your opening paragraph. [Approximately 100 words] For help crafting a good thesis statement, go to the Ashford Writing Center. Present your main argument for your thesis in standard form, with each premise and the conclusion on a separate line. Clearly indicate whether your argument is intended to be inductive or deductive. Follow up the presentation of your argument by clarifying the meaning of any premises that could use some explanation. [About 150 words] If your argument is deductive, then it should be valid (in the strict logical sense of the word); if it is inductive, then it should be strong. Make sure to avoid committing logical fallacies within your argument (e.g., begging the question). Additionally, the premises should be true, to the best of your knowledge. If one of your premises has a pretty obvious counter-example, then you should either fix the argument so that it does not have this flaw, or later, in your paper (steps three through five) you should address the apparent counter-example (showing that it does not really refute the truth of your premise). Arguments that are not valid, not very strong, commit fallacies, or that have counter-examples that are not adequately addressed will not receive full credit. Provide supporting evidence for the premises of your argument. [Approximately 350 words] Pay special attention to those premises that could be seen as controversial. Evidence may include academic research sources, supporting arguments (arguments whose conclusions are premises of the main argument), or other ways of demonstrating the truth of those premises. This section should include at least one scholarly research source. Explain a strong objection to your argument. [Approximately 250 words] Study what people on the other side of this question think about your reasoning and present the best possible objection that someone could have to your argument. Do not commit the straw man fallacy here. Reference at least one scholarlyresearch source. See the “Practicing Effective Criticism” section of Chapter 9 of the course text for more information. Defend your argument against the objection. [Approximately 200 words] Once you have presented the objection, indicate clearly how you might respond to it. It is acceptable to admit that reasonable people might disagree with you or that there might be an area in which your argument could be further strengthened, but you should do your best to explain why your argument is sound or cogent despite the objections. Provide an appropriate conclusion. [Approximately 75 words] For guidance about how to develop a conclusion see the Introductions and Conclusion resource from the Ashford Writing Center. For further instruction on how to create arguments, see the How to Construct a Valid Main Argument and Tips for Creating an Inductively Strong Argument documents as well as the Contructing Valid Arguments Video. For an example of a completed Final Paper, see the annotated example The Ethics of Elephants in Circuses. Let your instructor know if you have questions about how to complete this paper.
