Scenario/Summary
Oracle was developed as a Client/Server database, although there is a mainframe version. Although the process is somewhat automated, the Oracle Enterprise Database is not your simple auto-run installation application. The truth is that there is some preconfiguration work of the OS system as well as some forethought about naming conventions and the like that really need to be done before the actual physical installation process begins.
For this lab, you will document what you find to be some of the major differences in the installation process between the current Oracle database version and the previous version, based on information you are pointed toward.
You will be using your textbook and the Internet as your major sources of reference. The textbook has information concerning the installation of Oracle10g. For the installation process of Oracle9i, you will need to use either the Internet, an outside source/publication, or both.

Step 1: Create a Comparison Spread Sheet Document
Using MS Excel or other spread sheet program of your choice create a document comparing Oracke 9i and 10g. Within the comparison document include key differences in the areas listed below, but do not feel that you are limited to just this list.
Any preconfiguration of the Operating System.
Memory configuration consideration (both physical and logical).
Naming conventions of the Global Database or System Identifier (SID).
Online input screens within the Oracle Installer.
Processes that run during the installation (i.e., port assignments, directories defined, etc.).
Password configurations or assignments.
Web Services created (is there one?).
Any postconfiguration of the Operating System.

Scenario/Summary
As we begin our journey through the world of Oracle and explore the Oracle database architecture and functionality, it might first be helpful to start becoming familiar with one of the Oracle tools that you have not yet had a chance to work with in some of your other database courses.
Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) is the Oracle database GUI tool that allows the DBA to do many of the administrative and analytical functions in the database without having to write code. Although we will do much of our work in SQL*Plus for this course, it is always helpful to at least look at those other tools that are part of the Oracle architecture.
For these exercises, you only need to have your database instance showing in the OEM tree structure. To accomplish this, start OEM from the Oracle folder in your iLab applications window in Citrix. The first window you will see in OEM will be titled “Add Databases to Tree”. If you have not already done so, refer to the iLab Manual document that is in Doc Sharing for how to add your database instance. This document will be a good reference tool for several of the other things pertaining to this course so keep it handy. Once you have done this, log into your instance as the SYS AS SYSDBA user. Now you are ready to proceed.

HANDS-ON #1: Using Schema Manager
Using the Schema Manager, find the AQ$_QUEUES table in the SYSTEM schema. These tables are part of the Oracle data dictionary. Answer the following questions based on what you can find using the tabs on the right-hand side of the OEM screen.
Who owns this table?
What tablespace is it located in?
How many columns does the table have?
Which column is the Primary Key column?
Are there any other constraints associated with this table? If yes, what is the name of the constraint?
Place and save your answers in a Word document named week1_exercise.doc.
HANDS-ON #2: The Analyze Wizard Tool
Run the Analyze Wizard on the AQ$_QUEUES table in the SYSTEM schema (while the table is highlighted, select Objects => Analyze from the top menu, then follow the prompts). Now, view the results under the Statistics tab and answer these questions:
How many rows are in the table?
What is the average length of a row?
How many empty blocks are there for the table?
Place and save your answers in the Word document named week1_exercise.doc that you have started for this week’s exercises.
HANDS-ON #3: Finding Specific Objects
For the third part of the exercise, you will look at some of the database files and settings in your database instance. First, you will look at the SYSTEM datafile. Navigate to Storage =>Tablespaces => SYSTEM => Datafiles, and highlight the datafile you find there. Then, answer the following questions:
How large is the file?
What are the storage parameter settings for the file?
What is the full path to the file?
Now take a look at the file associated with the Redo Logs and answer the following questions:
How many log files do you currently have?
What is the full path to each?
What is the unit of storage type for data in the log files?
How large is each file?
