Since carbon dioxide (CO2) is considered a major component of the global warming crisis, air quality standards are beginning to play a central role in regulating this gas. CO2 is released into the air through the respiration process of organisms, the process of decay, volcanic activity, the release from ocean waters that absorb CO2, the burning of fossil fuels, cement production, and deforestation. Vehicles are one of the biggest sources of CO2 released into the air, and air quality dramatically decreases in areas with a large number of vehicles, such as major cities.
In this Discussion, you will learn more about the air quality standards of a regional government and the standards recommended by a global agency. You will evaluate whether enough is being done to improve air quality, and consider new technologies that help reduce CO2 emissions.

To prepare for this Discussion:
• Review Chapters 14 and 15 in the course text, Environmental Science.
• Review the WHO website on air quality in the Learning Resources.
• Choose two of the technologies listed in the box on page 396 or from your own prior knowledge to further study their effectiveness in reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
• Consider how air quality impacts the environment, agriculture, and the health of humans. Also consider the costs associated with poor health.
• Choose a state or country you would like to investigate for this assignment. It may be a state or country where you have lived, would like to live, or just one that is easy to find on the Internet. Locate the website for your chosen state or country’s government, and then find resources concerning their air quality regulations and standards. Compare the air quality regulations and standards from your chosen region with those listed on the WHO website.
• Reflect on how mandating a certain level of air quality improves the environment and human lives.
• What, if any, impact would reducing air pollution have on global warming?
With these thoughts in mind:
Post by Day 3, 2–3 paragraphs that evaluate the measures to reduce air pollution. Your post should include the following:
• An explanation of why air quality is important for humans and the environment
• An assessment of whether your chosen country or state complies with the air quality guidelines recommended by the WHO. Explain any differences you notice between the two standards (the WHO and your country or state).
• An evaluation of whether the WHO guidelines for air quality are successful in reducing air pollution in your chosen state or country. If not, what more should be done? If the guidelines are successful, do you foresee any need to increase or decrease these standards in the future?
• A conclusion that includes the research you did on the two technologies that reduce CO2 emissions. How could states and nations incorporate these technologies to meet or improve on the mandated air quality standards?
