Based on a dental hygiene educational experience discuss how competency based instruction is used in the dental hygiene program.
I. What is competency based instruction?
• “Competency” indicates that participants will be able to
perform a task or use a set of information competently
• Competency based instruction measures what
participants have learned as opposed to what
instructors think they have taught
• CBI integrates the participant’s life experiences into the
delivery method
• CBI encourages each individual to participate in the
learning experience
II. Components of competency based instruction
• Instruction is developed around stated objectives that
can be observed or measured
• Learning is measured according to how well the
learner performs in relation to competencies
(objectives) rather than in relation to other learners
• All learners have the opportunity to succeed
• Learners receive immediate feedback on how much
they have learned
• Instruction is individualized
• Various types of assessments – written as well as
observational – may be used to monitor progress
• Learners who have problems can obtain individual help
from instructors
• Learners may take competency-based tests ("criterion
checks")a number of times
• Learning outcomes can be replicated by other
instructors in other locations or at a later time
