Assignment
For this paper you must use at least 10 sources: 8 from our library’s databases and no more than two other sources such as (website or books). You will use sources, but they will serve as jumping off points for your discussion and as material to analyze and interpret. In English 121, you may have simply arranged quotations after a topic sentence and called it a research paper. However, this more advanced class requires more original thought, summary and paraphrase. The essay is longer with a greater intellectual depth. When you quote, paraphrase or summarize the outside material, be sure to keep track of the source and page numbers in order to prepare a Works Cited page. Be careful to evaluate these sources before you use them. Are they both trustworthy and useful to your paper?
Planning and drafting
First, select a topic that interests you (expect for abortion), and then do some research to discover what particular angle of the topic you want to explore. After spending some time reading and thinking about your topic, you need to decide how you will narrow it. For instance, “eating disorders” is too broad, but “Anorexia is not caused by cultural influences but brain chemistry” is narrow enough. Remember that this paper is not simply a summary of other sources, nor is it an argument for your individual ideas. A good research paper takes a stand that develops out of the data you have examined. It is objective enough in tone to recognize other positions on the topic if they are commonly held.
