Characteristics of Effective Professional Development

Bring to mind either the Study Elementary (“Building a Case for Collaborative Professional Learning”) or the Ford Middle School (“Professional Development Definition in Action”) video programs and think about how the professional learning in that school community contributed to student learning. Then, based on the organizing framework outlined by Dr. Hirsh in this week’s “A Framework for Professional Learning” media segment, answer the following for the professional development efforts in one of the school examples:

What is the content?

What are the processes?

What are the contexts?
Next, consider an example from your own professional learning that you found to be particularly powerful and effective. Which areas do you think were most challenging or required more support? Conversely, think about a professional development experience that had little or no impact and consider the factors that contributed to its ineffectiveness.

By Wednesday:

Post your analysis of either the Study Elementary or Ford Middle School example of professional development, including a brief description of the content, process, and context of the professional development effort for the example that you choose. Be sure to include information from this week’s Learning Resources to support your ideas.

Then, describe the following:

A professional development experience that you found to be particularly effective and useful

A professional development experience that you found to be ineffective and of little use to you
Your colleagues will analyze the experiences and try to identify the content, process, and context that may have contributed to the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of each experience.
