Term paper assignment – This paper will require you to look at artworks visually and conceptually but will also require a more formal structuring and more extensive research and citation of sources.
For this formal writing assignment you will select a piece of art or architecture made or built at some point in history. Then, choose another artwork from another point in history and compare and contrast the two. When comparing the two items think about both the formal aspects of each work as well as the conceptual aspects of each work. How was each made? why? with what? what was the meaning of each item in its original cultural context of production?
So for example: if you choose to compare and contrast a pyramid from ancient Egypt and a temple from ancient Greece you will need to compare the two buildings in terms of their appearance, their material composition, their mode of production (i.e.. how was each built?) You will also need to discuss why each was built and the meaning and significance each had for the civilization in which it was built.
