discuss the “behind-the-scene” Hollywood in the film “Sunset Boulevard” that is contrary to our common perception

This is a film analysis paper, and I have decided the topic as above and thesis as below. And the paper should focus on analyzing the theme of the movie, “Sunset Boulevard (1950)”. Remember to look for patterns in the film about this topic rather than summarize the narrative.

Here is my thesis: Hollywood has both good and bad tags. Many people persistently try to become part of it but quite a few people disdain and even empathize with Hollywood. In the film, Sunset Boulevard, performers, screenwriters, and producers all encounter different levels of struggles behind the Hollywood’s glamorous appearance. Fame and ambition versus spiritual emptiness and narcissism collide, which leads to the tragic ending of the Sunset Boulevard.

Detailed requirements:
Thematic – Discuss a specific theme that you consider significant in one of the films screened in class. Such themes might include: the struggles of the urban working class, the construction of family, the role of the individual in society, the law, the frontier, age, race, ethnicity, sexuality, etc. Consider how characters and events are represented and make meaning in relation to the theme of your choosing. Assess how the film expresses and uses the theme with reference to narrative structure, mise-en-scéne and film style.

Be Careful To:
• Develop a clear and concise thesis, which you should discuss with your TA. Whatever subject you choose to explore, you must have a coherent approach to the film(s) in question, and use clearly articulated descriptive examples to support your argument.
• Not merely re-state the plot, as you may assume that your reader has already seen the film. Rather, refer to specific scenes or shots and provide concrete examples to support your argument.
• Use film vocabulary in ways that demonstrate your understanding of terminology, without actually defining the terms and concepts in your paper.
• Refer to the characters by their names. For example, use “Rick Blaine” (from Michael Curtiz’s Casablanca) and not “the Humphrey Bogart character.”
• Write in the present tense/active voice when referring to the action in a film.
