Critical review: Address a public health nutrition question through evaluating and
critically appraising published research
The aim of this critical review is to address a public health nutrition question through
evaluating the research reported in 6-10 research papers. A core component of the
evaluation will be an assessment of the nutritional epidemiology methods used in each of
the studies.
1. Select a research question on that topic which meets the following criteria
a. The research is carried out in humans
b. Uses methods that have been considered in the course
c. Involves considering the findings of 6-10 research papers, for example –
evaluate the effect of a nutrition intervention in several communities/
populations,
test the efficacy or effectiveness of a program or policy in a population.
d. The research papers are reported in peer reviewed journals
2. Critically appraise each paper
3. Prepare a report as below.
Guidelines for the project report:
The report should be 3000 to 4000 words (please add word count to title page of
assignment) and address the following.
Introduction – provide brief background to the nutrition topic, and its significance
Clear statement of the research question to be addressed (use PICO)
Strategy for identifying and selecting the research papers
Brief critical appraisal of each research paper (using epidemiological criteria,
checklists)
Compare and contrast the nutritional epidemiology methods used in the papers
Your evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the methods, citing relevant
literature to support your evaluation.
Your assessment of the implications of differences in the nutritional epidemiology for
addressing the research question
Overall discussion and statement of conclusions in regard to your research question.

You should be able to come to preliminary conclusions and identify some of the key
issues to be addressed in a more comprehensive review.
