1.    Your research paper should be approximately 10 pages (8-12), including the “Works Cited” page.

2.    The subject will be your choice, but you must research and write about a writer, or the works of a writer, we have studied this semester.  On rare occasions and with the instructor’s advance permission, you may choose to write about an author we have not studied, but who has a serious and important body of work worthy of a college-level study.  Begin with a general review of recent reviews, critical analysis, and general criticism of the subject to educate yourself and your reader.  Then focus on a specific aspect of your subject that interests you, (the death theme in Emily Dickinson’s works, for example, or Hemingway’s existential views as expressed in A Clean Well-lighted Place). At that point, refine and limit your research to the specific focus of your study, looking specifically for sources (articles, essays, books, etc.) that may help explore and develop your thesis.  You should a total of 8 to 12 works cited entries.

3.    Your paper must follow the MLA format.  Your paper will be graded down if it departs in any way from the MLA guidelines.  This includes all aspects of format, including pagination, spacing, font, and documentation of sources.

4.    Your “Works Cited” must include at least 3 books and 2 professional journal articles.  You may use online documents, but only from valid, reliable professional/academic sources.  General uncontrolled cites, like Wikipedia and other online encyclopedia, are not appropriate for a college-level study.  You may also use newspaper articles, interviews, and single works in an anthology.
