Explore the Law

The actual court decision that enacts case law is a turning point but by no means the entire story, especially when it comes to ground-breaking legislation. In this week’s assignment, you will be placing the enactment of Title IX in historical context by looking at what led up to the enactment of the law and what has happened – in terms of agreement/disagreement with the law and compliance issues stemming from its enactment. (Hint: Look into the work of the Title IX Review Study Commission in 2003 and the cases cited in the introduction to Week 6 in this syllabus.)

Construct a simple 2-column Word document table with the date in the left-hand column and a short summary of the historical event in the larger right-hand column will work. You will also include a paper as part of this assignment.

Example:

Date Summary of Historical Event

Be sure to include the following in your timeline:
•An APA-format cover page.
•An introductory paragraph or two describing Title IX and why it was a ground-breaking, vector-turn piece of legislation.
•Profiles of events leading up to the Title IX decision and of events that have taken place since Title IX was decided. These may include legal decisions and examples of the concerns leading up to Title IX (perhaps newspaper or professional journal articles) and of implementation successes and challenges that have occurred since Title IX was enacted.
•About 1/3 of the timeline will address pre-Title IX; 2/.3 of the timeline will address post-Title IX.
•The paper will be 5 to 7 pages in length, using 12-point Times New Roman font and double-spacing the introductory and closing paragraphs. (Use your discretion re: spacing and font size when developing the actual timeline so that the mechanics best fit the timeline task.) The cover page and reference list are not included in this page count.
•A closing paragraph or two summarizing the “big picture” of the Title IX timeline and its status today.
•Then, you should draft a 3-5 page a summary noting your analysis of the information you learned in this assignment and the implications for today’s athletic programs.
•Include a minimum of 3 reference citations. (You will probably need to include many more than that in a project of this nature. The APA manual has tips for citing legal cases on pages 403 and 404.)

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your paper should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.
