For Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, compose a 4 minute speech detailing:
1. Background: introduce the disorder by describing:
a. characteristics
b. neuropathology associated with the syndrome
c. diagnostic procedures
d. treatment programs
The presentation should cover the basic information regarding the disorder. However the presentation should also focus on more controversial, recent, less well defined and intriguing aspects of the disorder.
To achieve this, search recent journal issues for this type of information. These aspects may include aetiological factors, genetic testing, best practice treatment, and diagnostic criteria.
1. Content (accuracy, appropriate level of detail for presentation, scholarly nature of the content)
2. How representative the case study is of that particular disorder
3. How well you are able to illustrate the major symptoms of the disorder using the fabricated scenario
4. How thoroughly it critically analyses the contentious/intriguing aspects of the disorder (depth of understanding beyond the basics of the disorder)
5. Presentation (e.g. clear and concise powerpoint slides, clarity of expression)
Other tips:
Read widely and DO NOT rely on starting references and text book information only. By second year we expect that your presentations are well informed by recently published journal articles. Recently published review articles are a good source of information here.
Each group member should contribute to the initial literature search on their particular case study (collecting journal articles, book segments, web-based information).
When searching for literature, remember to use both Australian and American spelling for certain terms i.e. foetal and fetal or behaviour and behavior.
Recommended databases include (but are not limited to) PsycINFO, Medline and Web of Knowledge.
Once each group member has had a chance to collect a reasonable amount of information, the first serious group meeting should be held (this may be face to face, via email, or by other means). The references should be shared and discussed, taking care to point out any special features that may be particularly appropriate for the oral presentation and that may help explain the material to your largely naïve audience.
