once you hve read the peom aloud several times, try to come uo with a working thesis :what is it about the poem that "get" to you? what is your argument?.To develop your argument , go to the peom and determine what aspects of the poem influence your thinking:what do we know about the speaker? does the speaker seem to be addressing someone in particular? what is the tone?stanzas?rhyme scheme? word choice ? figurative language – metaphors, symbols, imagery ?.Does the poem tell a story ?does the poem make a social or political statEment ?. REMEMBER :DO NOT SUMMARIZE THE PEOM. keep in mind though that your reader will not readily accept your argument if you do not "back up " your veiws with very specific refrences to the poem. you will want to use at least two direct quotations, the quotations should not be more than two sentences .
to help with your analysis, you may use the following quotations about poetry :
when billy collins (an american poet laureate) was asked how poetry is relevant today, he replied :" poetry is the only history we have of the human heart."
"in a sense of all poems are poems of witness. They record what its like to be alive , set down what is passing and irrecoverable"( kim Addonizio.Dorianne Laux).
