Your summary should address each of the following in separate sections: also see grading rubric.
A). Hypothesis(es): What was the major research question(s) addressed in the presentation? What hypothesis
was (or hypotheses were) explored?
B). A brief description of the methods used by the guest speaker to study the topic (very general terms are
acceptable). You may want to mention the types of organisms studied, how these organisms are isolated
and/or cultured, methods used to study them, important control experiments, etc.
C). What were the major results? How do these relate to the major question(s) described in the presentation
and why are these findings important for the field in general?
D). Include at least two of the overarching themes of biology (listed under the “Learning objectives” for this
course) as you discuss the presentation. Please bold, italicize each one – to ensure your TA finds them.
E). Choose an item / idea from the seminar that you think needs further study. Describe the issue you would
study; form and state a hypothesis; derive a methodology and describe the experiments you would do to test
the hypothesis; state / predict possible results from your experiments and discuss why you predicted those
results. DO NOT simply summarize an already published study (this is to be your idea). Section E is worth
33% of the grade (25 points) and should be about 1 page of the 3 page summary.
F). Retrieve two (2) or more research publications related to the subject of the research seminar and incorporate
that information into your summary in a meaningful way. **DO NOT just provide a list of papers.
G & H). Summary has the following:
✓ Logical flow, complete paragraphs and sentences & written for the general public to comprehend.
✓ Includes appropriate and accurate citations (in text & lit cited) and follows format requirements.
3. Illustration(s): Include illustrations as appropriate – they will not count in the page limit. If you utilize figures
from published papers make sure you acknowledge the source (in the text and provide a full reference in your
citations list). Include only illustrations that aid in the understanding or appeal of your summary; do not include
irrelevant illustrations.
4. References: Cite any articles or books you consulted (textbook information can be considered to be general
knowledge and does not need to be cited for this exercise). Use CSE standard scientific format for both your
in-text and literature cited citations (this was discussed in SGS). Information about CSE standard format can be
found at the end of the syllabus. **How do I cite the Seminar? We’ll help you out here : CSE citation of a seminar is:
“Author”. “Title”. Seminar presented at: Bio3401, Ohio State University. “Date” (as Year, Month, Day). “City, State”.
✓ Plagiarism reminder: This summary is expected to be your own work. Using someone else’s words or ideas
without acknowledging them is scientifically and academically wrong. Please keep this in mind as you write
your summary.
