1. Your essay should have a cover page which clearly states your name your student id, the course code (musi 131), the lecturer’s name, the date, and the question you have chosen to answer.
2. Your essay should include an introduction with a thesis statement, clear paragraphs with topic sentences, a conclusion, and a bibliography.
3. You should include music examples drawn from the Norton Anthology of Western Music to illustrate your points. Your examples should have a caption stating the composer, title, and source. Use italics for whole works (Armide); inverted commas for sections of works such as arias (En?n il est en ma puissance), and normal roman type for numbered works (Sonata no. 2).
4. All foreign words should be italicised (i.e. tragedie en musique, recitativo accompagnato, and sonata da chiesa. Words accepted into common English usage should be in normal roman type (e.g. basso continuo, ritornello, and concerto). If you are unsure, please ask.
5. You should use footnotes to reference any ideas, concepts, or facts taken from another author.
6. All works consulted (books, journal articles, scores, and online resources) should be cited in your bibliography in mhra style.
7. You should not cite Wikipedia in your essay. If you use a Wikipedia article as part of your preliminary research, you should follow up the citations therein and cite the academic sources, rather than the Wikipedia article.
8. You should include a word count (excluding the bibliography) at the end of your essay.
9. Your essay should be double spaced. You should number all pages.
It is strongly recommended to use a standard serif font (such as Palatino, Garamond, Baskerville, Times New Roman, or Caslon).
