The following information should prove useful as you prepare to consider the development and presentation of your research paper.

The paper must be submitted in APA or MLA format using Times New Roman Font, 12 pitch, double spaced, and using 1” margins.

A well written paper is the foundation of an effective, logically developed presentation. In considering your paper keep the following in mind:

1. Accuracy – report facts accurately and objectively. Cite your sources for such information.
2. Completeness – you need not include every detail you can find on the subject; rather, present all the information essential for your audience to understand the issue or discussion better.
3. Clarify – a simple, definite organization, based on a central idea and clearly thought progression, promote clarity.
4. Attention-holding – maintaining attention sometimes is difficult because technical data often lack the power to command attention. Use interesting illustrative materials to convey your point.
5. Collecting data – you will not be limited in the types of data that you may use. All of the following are acceptable.
a. Personal experiences
b. Files, reports, observations
c. Internet based information – note, however, that “cut and paste” narratives in papers often is transparent and will hurt your paper’s final grade.
d. Personal interviews with experts
e. Print sources – of all types, especially peer reviewed journals.

If I have a bias regarding the collection of information it is one that encourages the inclusion of recent peer reviewed journal citations. Research that ignores professional research journals immediately stands out and will work against the author. I recommend that each student conduct a thorough review of the research literature. This search can be enhanced through the utilization of library databases. Consultation with a resource librarian is recommended.

6. Citations – it is my preference that you use something similar to APA or MLA format when citing your references.
7. Proofreading – poorly written papers work against a well researched effort. Spelling errors, poor grammar and awkward sentence structures detract from the end product. Adjustment to one’s grade will be made based on such flaws. My best advice – have a trusted friend proof your paper prior to its submission. Moreover, make corrections and reprint the paper prior to the submission of the final copy.
8. Finally, consider using headers to separate content themes. This helps reduce reader fatigue and often provides a more informative presentation.
