Indigenous of health: The purpose of this assessment task is to allow you to show your understanding of some key issues relevant to the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

The purpose of this assessment task is to allow you to show your understanding of some key issues relevant to the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. To do this, you are required to respond to two of the four questions below. One of these must be either Q. 3 or Q.4. Each response should be a separate essay.
• Each essay should be 700 words
• Each essay will be marked separately, and will receive an individual mark out of 15%
• Essays are to be completed as a word doc and submitted via safe assign
These topics require you to read academic literature so that you can provide supported responses to them. This assessment task requires you to use more critical thinking and in-depth analysis than the exercises in assessment 1. They also require you to develop a clear argument, which is well supported by literature (research). The resource for this task explains what is meant by this.
In each essay, it is expected that you use at least five different sources (articles in academic journals, recent books etc.) to support your responses. You should write using academic language, but each essay should aim to provide an uninformed reader with
1) A good understanding of the topic
2) The key points made in relevant literature
3) Your supported argument about the key issue.

Q.1
Undertake a review of literature about the concept of ‘terra nullius’. Explain why this concept has had a detrimental impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s social emotional and wellbeing throughout the colonized history of Australia.
Q.2
Explain the pattern of dietary change, and its historical context, that has occurred amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples now residing in urban areas. Discuss the health implications of these changes.
Q. 3
After reading the case study ‘Nancy’s birthing story’, discuss the risks and benefits associated with birthing on country. You must relate your answer back to the case study. You may want to consider such issues as:
• What does it mean to an Indigenous woman to give’ ‘birth on country’?
• What type of support is required today for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to give ‘birth on country’?
• Do you think that support would make a difference to the health outcomes of mothers and infants? If so, why?
Q.4
Discuss the issues which impact on the father-child relationship for many Aboriginal men, and the suggested resolutions to these issues.
You may want to consider:
• Whose voice is heard in the literature
• Do the resolutions generally offered provide feasible solutions?
• In what areas could more work be undertaken?
