Assignment #3 ? Major Essay
Based on one of the topics from the course content, your Major Essay will be a substantial work of research, analysis, and argument/defense. Starting with the work you completed for the reading analysis, you will form a clear thesis statement and provide a research paper on that thesis that incorporates primary and secondary research (i.e., articles from both the course reading list and your own further research). The Major Essay is to be 8?10 pages in length, double-spaced.
The basic purpose of this assignment is to provide your reader with a clear and persuasive argument in support of your own position with respect to the argument (or persuasive case) that is being presented by a thinker in one of the readings that you have chosen for your Reading Analysis period. The bulk of your research efforts should be directed toward making sure that your own argument is well structured, that your premises are well chosen, that any factual claims involved in your argument are well-informed, and that your premises provide enough support for your conclusion in order for a critical, but fair, reader to be inclined to give your conclusion serious consideration.
Once again, your Essay Assignment should attempt to follow (as much is possible) something like a "20/80" rule. That is to say:
1. 20% of your Essay Assignment should consist of (at the beginning of your essay) presenting your reader with a clear, but concise, analysis of the argument you are going to be responding to. Basically, this will consist of a clear and concise rendering of the material that you covered in your Reading Analysis Assignment (see above) in order to convince your reader that you have a clear grasp of the issue that "your argument" will be responding to.
2. 80% of your essay assignment should then consist of presenting your reader with your own clear, well composed, well structured, and well informed (and well researched) argument in support of your position on a particular issue.
