The first assessment task requires students to select and critically evaluate a journal article of more than 25 pages from the 2013 or 2014 editions of the Business Ethics Quarterly. An example of the type of article that is suitable for critique, as well as some general guidelines on the critical evaluation of information sources, are included in the assessment module in Moodle.
A journal article critique specifically requires students to:
Precis (briefly summarise) the key arguments and findings of the selected journal article
Critically evaluate the article’s strengths and weaknesses in the context of the current discourse (other literature) on the topic.
A critical evaluation should not just be a summary of the article being reviewed, but should demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the article’s meaning and significance. What is required is a thoughtful and informed critique in the students own words of the article’s merits and contribution to an understanding of the topic.
Task 1 is intended to assess the student’s capacity to:
Conduct independent research
Assimilate, evaluate and comprehend complex subject matter
Differentiate between information analysis, evaluation and synthesis
Think critically and develop and support an argument
Recognise, interpret, discuss and critique ethical theory as it relates to the business world
Apply an ethical framework and concepts in evaluating dynamic situations
Communicate effectively in writing and comply with academic writing standards.
