You will contact a working journalist ? it doesn?t matter where or in which arena they work (newspaper, TV, radio, cable, blogging), so long as they regularly creating content. Editors, producers, and news photographers count, too. Plumb your own circle of friends, classmates, and family for possibilities. Maybe you?ve met a journalist, or been interviewed by a journalist, in your travels. Arrange to shadow the journalist for a day. Think of yourself as an anthropologist who?s exploring the craft. Observe carefully what?s going on ? check out the interactions that the journalist has with editors, sources, officials, each other, and citizens. Take extensive notes. Start the process by getting some background information on your journalist ? where they went to college, their major, and most important, why they decided the craft of journalism was for them. Some questions to consider: What pressures does the journalist face? What obstacles get in the way of covering the news? Does the reporter seem to make compromises as he or she labors to complete their stories? How does his or her personality and background seem to affect their work? Is Twitter really becoming an important part of the newsgathering process? You?ll write an 8-10 page long-form feature/profile on your journalist. It must include photos and/or video clips of what you?ve observed. Focus on giving the reader a clear, fully developed sense of the reality of what it?s like to work as a reporter.
