Course Description:
This course examines the history of China since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. It covers events including the rise of Communism in China, Maoist experiments like the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, China’s opening to the outside world, Tiananmen Square democratic movement, and China’s rise (or revival) as a world power. We will study China in terms of its politics, gender, economy, and foreign relations.
