Diablo Valley College SOCIO120: Homework Assignment 3, Fall 2014
This assignment is meant to build on what you have done in the Homework 1 and Homework 2 and to help you identify and explore social institutions. First, choose an article to deconstruct using sociological concepts. You will find links to your choices on D2L. D2L Content > Assignments > HW-3 Topic choices.
Next, review the definition and explanations of a social institution using information from the lecture Powerpoints and pages 12-15 in your textbook. Once you have chosen your topic and identified at least one social institution in the article, use Chapters 11-18 in the textbook, which are about various social institutions, to inform your paper, and a chapter that relates to your chosen social institution must be cited. Hint: Each article includes some sort of social institution even if it doesn’t specifically mention a social institution. If a social institution isn’t explicitly mentioned, it is your task to correctly identify one or more social institutions that are implicitly related to the topic. Make sure you identify the article that you are writing about in your essay and make sure you identify one or more social institutions in the article.
Next, use your sociological imagination (SI) to address the following three questions: How would a sociological theory explain what’s in the article you chose? How does the institution(s) include stratification components that we have covered in class? How might different people be affected differently by the institution(s)? Define your terms and make explicit links between sociological concepts in the unit on stratification and examples from your chosen topic. Use examples from the article to illustrate and support the sociological concepts.
As you write, demonstrate “fluency” in the language of sociology. Focus on concepts related to our unit on stratification: systems, income, gender, and race and ethnicity. Use terms that we have used in class in your explanation, and demonstrate that you are using them correctly by defining them and giving an example from the article. Do not assume that I know what the terms mean (I do, but I need to know that you do, too…) Applying sociological theory, understanding how different people “experience” social institutions differently according to Sociology and using sociological terms correctly are keys to successful completion of this assignment. If you use ideas or words that are not your own, make sure you quote or cite them properly. Make sure you include your word-count. Read the “general instructions for writing assignments” at the end of the syllabus and posted on D2L.
Your assignment needs to be typed, saved as a Windows text file (NO pdf, NO Mac pages file), and handed in through the D2L Homework 3 dropbox before 11:59:00pm. If you need to hand it in late, there will be a late dropbox with a 72 hour time limit for you to submit the assignment for reduced points. No submissions accepted after the automatic extension expires.
Grading Criteria (100 points possible)
1. Using the sociological imagination and fluency in sociological terminology = 25 points
2. Incorporating stratification concepts and sociological theory = 25 points
3. Supporting examples = 20 points
4. Structure, flow, and conclusion that is supported by the paper = 15 points
5. Grammar and spelling = 10 points
6. Citations = 5 points
An “A” paper will have all of the above, plus 1) a thesis, 2) topic sentences for each paragraph, 3) a logical structure and flow, 4) properly cited evidence, and 5) a conclusion that is supported by the evidence. Although this is not a writing class and I will not be grading for writing per-se, a poorly written paper can often detract from the ideas you are trying to express. Reminder—though it is not a prerequisite, eligibility for ENGL 122 is the recommended level of preparation for this course. If you need help writing your papers, contact the tutoring center. In addition, at least 2 copies of “A Guide to Writing Sociology Papers” are on reserve in the library and D2L.

CITATIONS You must give credit to your sources of information by citing them properly (Sociology follows A.P.A. style, but you can use M.L.A or another style as long as it’s correctly used). This requirement includes the textbook or lecture. If you cite any information obtained solely from class lecture, include a citation. You may cite it as “Sociology 120 lecture notes,
Papers are automatically processed by an originality-checking service and a report is generated documenting how much of the paper is not original work. Papers are then evaluated for possible plagiarism. Do your own work and cite your sources–especially if you quote or paraphrase. You got your information to complete this assignment from somewhere, so you need to have at least one citation, even if it’s the textbook or lecture.
