Guiding Questions for Book Analysis:
1. This novel is about negotiating multiple identities. What are the numerous identities or loyalties that Khadra struggles with? List them and explain what becomes conflictual for her and how she comes to terms with her hybridity. Could we say that, in fact, her hybridity becomes a strength or, if not, why not? (In answering this, consider Alia Hogben’s observations in her article We are Woven from Many-Coloured Threads available on URCourses. )
2. In answering number one, look at the issues listed on the back of this page and examine them in light of question one. Choose three or four issues from that list and explain how these contribute to the conflict she experiences.
3. Can we generalize from the novel to the actual experiences of Muslims in North America? Why or why not?
