INSTRUCTIONS FOR WORLD ENGLISH REPORT
1.1 Introduction
Write two to three sentences stating the purpose and context.
1.2 Executive Summary
Give a summary of your report findings. Address the following:
• What is the relevance of World Englishes to business communication?
• State the main points of the research you’ve done.
• State a conclusion of your findings: How will World English data (data from the readings and your own research) apply to you?
Tips for this section:
• Don’t summarize using vague thoughts and language. Provide a clear conclusion of your report.
• Write concisely and concretely.
1.3 World English Data
• Write an overview of World Englishes based on the reading materials: “Global Business Speaks English,” “The Globalization of English Report,” and “Conclusion: World Englishes: Legacy and Relevance” (found in Cultures, Contexts, and World Englishes).
• Use quotes and concrete facts.
• You may use other chapters from Cultures, Contexts, and World Englishes (file on Moodle), but it is not necessary.
1.4 World English in Practice
We’ve completed these activities as we studied World Englishes:
1. “Can You Guess Where People are From Based on Their Accents?”
2. “What Type of English Do You Speak?”
3. World English observation on or off-campus (group activity using a portion of class time).
• Explain the significance of these activities using the articles stated above as support.
• Address at least one example where you’ve encountered the concept of World Englishes on the job, in school, or elsewhere.
• Analyze the ethical concerns of World Englishes in the workplace. E.g., Would you fire someone with a heavy accent? Would you not hire someone based on their accent? What about writing skills?
1.5 Applying World Englishes in Future Careers
In this section answer the following:
• What is your major?
• Are you already working or interning? If so, what do you do?
• What kinds of companies interest you in your field?
• Choose at least one company and note its size, neighborhood demographic, targeted market, and owners.
• Include market research with graphs and other data analysis when applicable.
• Explain how you may come in contact with World Englishes in the future.
1.6 Conclusion
• What are your immediate and future plans for applying the concepts you’ve learned?
• What did you learn after researching specific companies?
• What did you find valuable about World Englishes when applied to business communication?
