Research Methods and Data Analysis for Psychology

Related and Independent t-Tests

The t-test is a frequently used statistical procedure that compares the means of two groups. There are two versions of the test based on whether the two groups are independent or related. Participants in related groups (also known as paired samples) share many common characteristics, whereas participants in independent groups do not. You must be able to identify which version of the t-test should be used in a given situation. This Discussion focuses on helping you identify the version to use based on the type of groups you want to compare. To prepare for this Discussion, review the “Table of Variables” document in this week’s Learning Resources. Think about how you would analyse the data using a t-test.
Discussion Question:

Based on the variables given in the table Of Variables, is there any potential data to be used for an independent sample t-test?
