To substitute for a quiz grade, you can write a response paper based on the day’s reading. Your response papers should be no fewer than three pages in order to receive full credit, and it is an all or nothing proposition. Please type in 12 point font, double-space, with margins no larger than 1 inch. Again, make sure you have at least three pages, not 2 ½ or 2 ¾.
You are allowed to submit no more than one response paper per week for a total of five for the semester. At the end of the semester, I will count up your response papers and apply that number against your lowest quiz grades. In other words, I will drop the lowest quiz scores. For more details on what and how to write a response paper, keep reading:
In your responses, you should address one or more of the discussion questions I post in the folders on Blackboard. Or you can choose to address your own set of questions/issues. Your prose need not be highly developed and sophisticated. I don’t expect you to present a treatise on the text. Think about these more as journal entries. You write down your thoughts, feelings, any questions the texts create in your mind. Maybe there’s a really great passage that strikes you for some particular reason. You can discuss the passage. What is its relationship to the text as a whole? What theme does it emphasize? What does it reveal about the writer/culture/genre/America? Maybe you note similarities between the week’s readings and a text we discussed in a previous week. Your response paper could be a compare/contrast. If you don’t know what to write about in any given week, you can’t go wrong if you simply respond to the discussion questions. DO NOT, however, merely write a summary of the texts. I am going to assume you have read the text, and you should feel free to make the same assumption about me. Therefore, a plot summary is superfluous and prevents you from showcasing your own thoughts, feelings, engagement with the text. You are allowed, however, to quote from the text. Just be careful that the quotes don’t “pad” or inflate your three-page minimum. The quotes should have a purpose and should be no more than half a page (in total) of your three-page response.
I won’t accept late response papers. Also, I won’t grade the quality of your thoughts/writing, except to ensure that the response is coherent and readable. You will earn a check+ (meaning full credit) or a minus (meaning no credit, which happens if you submit a response that is fewer than three pages, incoherent, or largely summary information.).
