Restorative Justice Final paper

Restorative justice is an ideology that explores looking at justice and our criminal justice system from a different lense. With any ideal come great deal of criticism which is a current issue faced by many restorative justice programs. I propose to look at three aspects and counter how these ideals are actually addressed or dismissed by a true restorative justice practice. Looking at the detailed arguments of people is currently against restorative justice, and then by pointing to aspects of restorative justice that specifically addresses the issues.
Restorative justice leads to vigilantism by communities and families are a popular argument because restorative justice programs involve multiple actors in their programs it provides a platform for a masked form of “street justice” to be carried out. Restorative justice does not address the recidivism rate amongst offenders involved in their programs; this comes from the belief that restorative justice negates to actual restore the offenders that they claim they are trying to assist. Restorative justice neglects to look at the structural and systemic causes of crimes is also a big counter argument, which comes from the ideal that restorative justice does not look at the root causes such as class, race, gender and other social factors that cause the crime.
