Globalization is a contributing factor to the spread of democracy or democratic principles. According to Payne (2011), globalization contributes to weakening the power of centralized government and helps to empower citizens by fostering economic prosperity, the acquisition of private property, and increased access to information. But globalization is also widely perceived as undermining democracy by weakening governments’ control over many issues, thereby diminishing the effectiveness of citizen participation in the democratic process. Increasingly, at the global level, organizations that are not representative of the people are making decisions that have profound and global consequences for ordinary people.
