This essay should according to text book. For this assignment, you will write a 4-6 page essay on the reasons for having a government. Use the first three chapters of the Dye textbook as your source material to explain why we have a government, what sort of political system we live under and how the U.S. Constitution structures our political order. Here are some important concepts that you will want to include in your discussion:
· Who governs, for what ends and by what means?
· The purposes of government
· Democracy and its different forms
· Ideology in American politics
· Liberty and equality
· The way the Federal government is organized by the Constitution
Develop your essay by first reading the first three chapters in the book and then focus on the points I’ve listed above. You must make direct reference to the Dye textbook. Please use simple, embedded references to the book that will look like this (Dye, pg. 96) whenever you quote the text or paraphrase ideas that you’re referring to. Do not use outside sources or make reference to materials that I have not assigned for this class.
I am expecting you to write a clear, well edited paper that explains the concepts I’ve asked you about. I do not use the email function in Blackboard. Do not submit your papers there – rather, send them to me at my address.
I expect well organized, clear and well written work. Remember to cite your source for all quotes and ideas that you paraphrase from the book. Again, I’d like you to use an embedded reference that will look like this: (Dye, pg. 24) to indicate specifically where you found the idea or quote that you are using. You do not need to give me a full citation for the book as I am very familiar with that source! Make sure that the following appear on all of your assignments:

References for all direct quotes and ideas that you paraphrase. You will lose points if you don’t make direct reference to Dye in many places. If you are unsure as to how to do this, be sure to ask me!

· The idea behind this assignment is for you to explore the ideas presented in the first few chapters of the book and explain what our government is all about. Once you dive into the reading, I think you’ll see that this project is not as daunting as you might think. Refer to the ideas you draw from the book (either through quotes or by making reference to Dye’s point of view) rather than relying only on your own opinion.
