Synthesis Essay comparing Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt : Advertising and Violence by Jean Kilbourne p. 420 and Gender Advertisements by Erving Goffman
Guidelines – For this assignment, the synthesis essay is one in which you will be required to use two sources. Consequently, in this essay you will develop and explain a thesis on the writing from the chapter selected, which come from the same perspective (they agree or disagree on the matter). You will compare or contrast how two different essays discuss the same idea. You must consider the structure and merits of each argument, and demonstrate how counter-arguments are made. On the other hand, if you consider two authors who have a different view of the same idea (are in direct opposition to each other/one is for and the other against)m, you may expound upon which argument is more persuasive, but you must base it on a careful examination of the work, and give evidence why. You will not agree or disagree, you will simply state that so-n-so makes the better argument because… Remember your job is to educate your audience about the issue, not convince them to hold an opinion about it.
Requirements: Thesis (an assertion you make about the main idea that connects the two essays.
Remember to cite and document the essays at least two times per essay. You may do this through quotation or paraphrase, of course using MLA documentation to refer to the essays. The essay will consequently have at least 4 references to my sources.
Consider potential objections to the idea you are discussing and look at how your source essays might deal with those objections.
