I. Purpose:. The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to learn about problems of people with serious mental illness living in the community and to gain a greater understanding of the importance of mental health care in the community setting. People with serious mental illness account for a significant percentage of the homeless population and have greater difficulties dealing with their homelessness. Compared with those who are mentally health, the mentally ill are homeless for longer periods of time, and have less contact with their families, encounter more barriers to employment, display poorer health and have more encounters with the legal system.
