For this week’s concert, we will be listening to the complete 2nd symphony of Gustav Mahler. The link we will use is as follows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZzFruQCofM As with the last virtual concert, you will be completing an essay (2-3 pages) after watching listening to/watching this work. The topic of your response is as follows: Mahler seems especially concerned with the climactic directionality (using music effects to build toward climaxes) of his symphonies, and this symphony is certainly not an exception to this compositional predilection. What specific factors contribute to the climax of his 2nd symphony as a whole? Make sure you cite specific musical characteristics in your responses, and make sure that you match these to specific timings in the recording. (You must mention at least four characteristics.) Some items you might consider are: the cyclical nature of the symphony (this means the return of material from earlier movements re-used in later movements); orchestration, including the use of the choir; the dramatic use of text; confirmation of the tonic key.
Do NOT use online references. Watch the video and write the response with correct terminology.
