Your essay should utilize assigned materials and film analyzed and discussed in class. Although you should incorporate a range of artists, thinkers, and musicians, your essay may focus on two or three.
The essays also will make reference to the debates among black middle class leaders at the turn-of-the-century (Booker T. Washington’s “Up From Slavery”, W.E.B. Du Bois’s “The Souls of Black Folk”, and Mary Church Terrell “First Presidential Address to the National Association of Colored Women,…”.
Consider the role of white supremacy and dominant black stereotypes.
Your essay should follow the five section format as discussed in class (remember you are not confined strictly to five paragraph) and you should use the handout (Tips on essay writing) as a writing guide.
