Irvin Yalom is a celebrated therapist and author, who utilises existential therapy as the basis for his counselling interventions. In his most well-known book, he discusses ten cases, often with startling insight into both his clients, and himself.
?In this assignment, you will be assigned one chapter (Chapter 1: "Love’s Executioner") to
?read in text that hasn’t been discussed in your tutorials. You should also read the prologue of the book.
For the case in Yalom’s book write 600 words (typed, double-spaced, 12pt font) describing your response to the reading. The intent of this assignment is to give you an excuse to do some self-reflection: reflect on the material, describe your reactions, and note if there is any impact on your relationships, interest in clinical or counselling psychology (or other career paths), future plans, etc. as a result of the reading. This is an important skill for a therapist to have (the better you know yourself, the more helpful you can be to others).
You should also take care to relate the material back to your more general knowledge, and to your knowledge of existential psychological theory. In particular, highlight how the material relates to Yalom’s discussion of the four existential givens (if it does), and how he demonstrates that “it is possible to confront the truths of existence and harness their power in the service of personal growth” (p. xiii, Prologue).
Charting your reactions to the reading material will be a helpful exercise of this skill (if you let it be). Although self-reflection is important, your assignment must be connected enough to the reading and to the underlying concepts that it is apparent that you have actually read it!
?As a short piece, you do not need to use a formal essay structure (intro, body, conclusion), but the reaction should be written in full paragraph format, in APA style. You do not need to reference papers outside of the given chapter; however, if you do, you will need to include a
??formal reference list (not in the word count). You also do not need to formally reference the given chapter.
