SENTENCE ANALYSIS INSTRUCTIONS
Assessment Overview
The purpose of this assessment is to engage in the critical reading process to demonstrate your understanding of how sentences vary depending on rhetorical situation, audience and context. To do this, you will perform a rhetorical analysis on sentences from two non-fiction texts of your choice, such as a website, newspaper article or academic journal. These should be two complete sentences from outside sources. Your rhetorical analysis should balance description, analysis and comparison of the two texts, including:
• An analysis of the rhetorical situation for each sentence
• An analysis of the rhetorical strategies and appeals in each
sentence
• An analysis of the style, method, and structure of each sentence You will also reflect on the process of conducting a rhetorical analysis, including your research and selection methods.
Assessment Criteria The sentence task assignment will be assessed according to the following criteria:
• Rhetorical analysis of the chosen sentences
• Evidence of reflection on the writing and research processes
• Clarity and correctness of writing, including grammar, punctuation, and referencing
• Following instructions, including formatting requirements and Academic Honesty
Formatting Requirements
• Include your name and SID at the top of the document
• Use 1.5 or double spacing
• Include in-text citations as well as a bibliography in the referencing style of your choice • Include word count, excluding the bibliography

• Must be a Word .doc or .docx file saved as SENTENCE_SURNAME_SID (ex: SENTENCE_NAME_123456789.docx)
• Submit to the designated drop box on Blackboard
