Research Measurement

TASK: The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate the process of measurement.

1. Select a topic (may use same topic of literature review).
2. Develop a research question out of this topic (1 mark). You can use the same one as
literature review if you wish.
3. Identify the independent and dependent variables in your research question (1 mark).
4. Formulate a hypothesis based on your research question (3 marks).
5. Develop conceptual definitions for both your independent and dependent
variables (3 marks).
6. Develop operational definitions for both your independent and dependent variables (3 marks).
7. Identify the unit of analysis on which data (information) would be collected (2 marks).
8. Identify the level of measurement at which each of your variables would be measured (2 marks)
Further Information
(1) Select a topic (may use same topic of literature review).
(2) Develop a research question out of this topic (1 mark).
You can use the same one as the literature review if you wish.
These three assignments are a building process; however, if your earlier question didn’t work as you wished, you can change it.
(3) Identify the independent and dependent variables in your research question (1 mark). If there is a complex interaction that cannot be readily defined in terms of an independent and dependent variable then briefly explain why.
(4) Formulate a hypothesis based on your research question (2 marks).
A hypothesis is a prediction about relationships between variables. It is involves theoretical expectations about the processes at work.
(5) Develop conceptual definitions for both your independent and dependent variables (3 marks). If there is a complex interaction that cannot be readily defined in terms of an independent and dependent variable then briefly explain why.
Conceptual Definition – a definition of the variable that is abstract or theoretical and cannot be measured directly. For example, violence is the use of physical force to hurt or abuse.
(6) Develop operational definitions for both your independent and dependent variables (3 marks).
Operational definition – The description of how the variables will be measured in the study. The operational definition is the indicator that is chosen to represent or be the proxy that stands in for the conceptual definition.
For example, indicators that could be used to measure violent temper include violent outbursts or violent fights. For further information see pages 81-82 in the textbook.
(7) Identify the unit of analysis on which data (information) would be collected (2 marks). For explanation of unit of analysis see pages 74-75 in textbook (Symbaluk, 2014).
(8) Identify the level of measurement at which each of your variables would be measured (2 marks). nominal, ordinal, integral, ratio
