Part A – Short answer questions

This research task is in two parts. You are required to complete each part.

Part A – The reflective process

Read pages 12-14 of the following Practice Principle Guide:
Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, 2012 Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework, Practice Principle Guide, 8 Reflective Practice, State of Victoria, available at: education.vic.gov.au.
On reading the required pages complete the following:
a) In your own words, describe three strategies that educators could use in an early childhood setting to help build a learning community with a culture of reflective practice.
b) Describe how you think these strategies could assist educators to gather information for self-evaluation and set personal goals.
Each answer should be approximately 200 – 300 words in length.

Part B – Reflect on practice

Write a paragraph (approximately 100 – 200 words) on each of the following reflective questions:
a) What role does feedback play in the reflective practice process?
b) What skills are needed by an educator to effectively give and receive constructive feedback to colleagues and others?
c) What communication strategies can be used in an effective feedback process?
To help you answer accurately, you may refer to the course textbook, other professional readings and identified key resources.

Part C – Project
Student instructions
For this assessment task you are required to interview an experienced practitioner working in a regulated early childhood education and care service about their and their colleagues’ methods for engaging in reflective practice.
Prior to the interview, develop five questions to ask the practitioner to prompt discussions about:
– what reflective practice means to them
– the techniques and tools they use to engage in reflective practice
– what forms of reflection results in improved practice
– types of changes made from been a reflective practitioner.
The interview can be carried out face-to-face or by phone or Skype. To reduce the time demand on the interviewee, try to limit your interview to 30 minutes.
Summarise the practitioner’s responses to each question, and then write a paragraph about how the practitioner and their colleagues have engaged in reflective practice. Consider what methods of reflection they used, who participated and how changes were made as a result of their reflections.
Submissions must include:
• The five questions asked of the practitioner (clearly listed), with summarised responses to each question.
• A paragraph explaining how the how the practitioner and their colleagues engage in reflective practice.
• The practitioner’s contact details, including their full name, place of employment and telephone number. Please note that the assessor may contact the practitioner to verify the completion of the task as outlined above.
