Beliefs and Assumptions About Professional Development

Post two or more of your own beliefs and assumptions about professional development, and describe any trends you noticed in teachers’ beliefs and assumptions through the informal surveys of new and veteran teachers. Then, share your thoughts and experiences related to professional development by responding to two or more of the above prompts that are most relevant to your current setting or about which you are most passionate. Ask your Walden colleagues to respond to any questions that you have regarding the “new” vision of professional development. Be sure to include information from this week’s Learning Resources to support your ideas.

As this week’s Learning Resources emphasize, the nature and purpose of professional development today has shifted from what it was two decades ago. This shift requires new ways of thinking about school improvement and new approaches to professional learning. As you begin to consider research-based practices that lead to powerful professional learning, an important first step is to consider your own current thinking about professional development, student learning, and school improvement. As Hirsh and Killion note, “Clarifying one’s principles and reaching consensus on those that drive decisions in an organization will do more to promote deep transformation than simply adopting new practices” (Hirsh & Killion, 2009, 465–466.

Consider your beliefs and assumptions about professional development for K–12 educators and administrators. Prior to this Discussion, conduct an informal survey or interview with two or more educators that you know—both new and veteran teachers—to find out about their beliefs and assumptions about professional learning for educators. Look for trends among your colleagues and the informal survey of both new and veteran teachers.

Then, consider the following questions:

How has your thinking about school improvement and professional learning changed or been reaffirmed by this week’s Learning Resources?

How are your own professional development experiences similar to or different from the vision of professional learning described by various experts this week?

How have you seen professional development change over the course of your teaching career, if at all?

How are professional development resources used in your school and district? What beliefs and assumptions do you think underlie these practices?

Where do you see the focus of professional development in your school, at the district level, and at the state level? Is it more teacher or student focused? Does more professional learning occur at the school level or district level?

What other questions do you now have about professional development today?

Post two or more of your own beliefs and assumptions about professional development, and describe any trends you noticed in teachers’ beliefs and assumptions through the informal surveys of new and veteran teachers. Then, share your thoughts and experiences related to professional development by responding to two or more of the above prompts that are most relevant to your current setting or about which you are most passionate. Ask your Walden colleagues to respond to any questions that you have regarding the “new” vision of professional development. Essays are assessed against five key criteria: argument quality, analysis quality, structure, writing and referencing. Original and thoughtful arguments will be rewarded.

Essay Structure:
INTRODUCTION

1. ORIENTATION: introductory sentence to establish relevance of the question (perhaps a comment on what is going on today in that regard).

2. ARGUMENT: clear statement of case/purpose/response to essay question.

3. METHOD: explanation of why you chose those particular countries – remember that there has to be a reason which makes sense.

‘Language choice in multilingual communities’

Assessment item 3: Essay

For this assignment, you will write an essay on your topic of choice from the list below.

Language choice in multilingual communities

It has been suggested that certain social factors – who you are talking to, the social context of the talk, the function and topic of the discussion – are important in accounting for language choice in many different kinds of speech community. Consider your own community. Are these factors useful in capturing broad generalisations about your own community? Are there other factors that come into play? Support you answer with specific examples.

Language maintenance and shift

Pauwels (2005) demonstrates the importance of the role of the family in maintaining the community language in the Australian immigrant environment. Consider the strategies proposed by Pauwels to promote the maintenance of the community language. In your opinion, are these strategies effective in countering the economic, social and political factors which contribute to the shift from the community language to English?

World Englishes and linguistic imperialism

Pidgins and creoles are often perceived negatively by people who do not speak them. They have been described as mongrel jargons and macaroni lingos, and given negative labels such as Broken English and Kitchen Kaffir. What are the possible reasons for these negative attitudes? To what degree are they justified? You may consider the origins, the linguistic features, and the roles and functions of these languages in your discussion.

Language variation and change

According to Holmes (2013), “interaction and contact between people is crucial in providing the channels for linguistic change” (p. 225). Consider your own variety of English. What are some of the linguistic features of your variety of English which can be attributed to contact with another language? Support your answer with an explanation of when and how these languages came into contact.

Cross-cultural communication

The fact that ESL classes (e.g., in Australia) include students from a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds can pose certain difficulties in communication. What are some of the potential problems that could be caused due to cultural differences in the forms of directives (how people get others to do things) and politeness used in the classroom? How might you, as a teacher of English, use these differences to achieve a positive outcome?

Sociolinguistics and education

According to Rajagopalan (2004), “English Language Teaching is poised to undergo some dramatic changes as native varieties of English give way to World English as the most coveted passport to world citizenship” (p. 111). To what extent do you agree with this proposition? Do you see Rajagopalan’s prediction as being relevant to the context of Australia?

Assessment criteria

This assessment item contributes 40% towards your final assessment for this unit. You will be marked according to the following assessment criteria:
1. Demonstrated understanding of the chosen topic, associated propositions, concepts and issues (15 marks);
2. Demonstrated mastery of the subject through the use of appropriate, relevant and compelling content to develop a focused argument (10 marks);
3. Appropriate choice of references, and demonstrated understanding and critical grasp of main arguments contained in the literature cited (10 marks); and
4. Effective organisational structure, and coherence in writing (5 marks).

A marking rubric will be available on Moodle for your reference.

Q1: I would like to do the ‘Language choice in multilingual communities’ topic but I’m not sure how to approach it. It says to consider my own community. Does that mean I can talk about the multilingual community within Australia as a whole or does it have to be more specific (such as the Spanish community or the French community etc)?
A1: You should aim to be specific for this question. Talk about ONE particular community: it can be one that you belong to or one that you know intimately (perhaps a good friend is a member of this community). So, discussions and examples should be about this particular community. You will however need to connect this community’s experiences to earlier findings, literature and theories on language choice in multilingual communities. This literature can be either general (multilingual communities all over the world), and specifically about the community that you are talking about (e.g., Greek Australians in Melbourne), or may even be about other communities elsewhere (e.g., Italians in New York).

Q2: If I am talking about my own community, should I use first person writing?
A2: You can discuss this by presenting yourself as a member of the community (therefore, first person pronouns like I, me, we, us, ours), but you can also present yourself as an observer (and the community is referred to in the third person–they, theirs, etc). In the case of the latter, the community (although your own), is the focus of your study. The advantage of the latter is that it emphasizes your role as the objective observer and analyst. You maintain appropriate distance as an observer. Some writers are very skillful in using third person throughout, and where appropriate, making references to their own experience in the first person.

Q3: Should the examples be from our own community? Or do you want us to look for examples in the literature?
A3: The question requires you to make observation of your own community. So the examples should be from your community. BUT, you should relate this community’s experiences to earlier studies. Hence, you will be citing (using appropriate citation methods) examples from other communities as well.

Addresses learning outcome(s):
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a general understanding of the complexity of relations between language and society and increased their sensitivity to the social and cultural factors that inform language teaching and learning; and

Advancing Professional Learning Through Beliefs and Assumptions

In this week’s Discussion that you and your colleagues examined beliefs and assumptions about professional learning and considered how these influence teaching and learning in your classroom, school, and/or district. Now, you will engage in a similar process with your learning team to examine how beliefs and assumptions influence practices at your school and/or in your school district.

Part 1

Meet with your learning team. (If you cannot all be in the same physical location, you might consider communication tools such as Skype, LiveMeeting, or other network services.) Share with the team some of the principles outlined by Hirsh and Killion in this week’s Learning Resources. Then ask them to help you clarify the principles that underlie your school’s professional development practices.

What principles seem to guide professional learning at the school?
What examples of professional development routines, practices, and policies at the school illustrate these principles?
Then, look at the “Changing Professional Development” chart on page 468 of the Hirsh and Killion article. Ask your learning team to share ideas about where your school/district is placed on the continuum from outdated practices (the “From” column) to effective research-based practices (the “To” column). Try to identify two or more areas of strength and two or more areas that need improvement related to your school/district’s professional development efforts.

Part 2
On your own, consider what you want to learn in this course to help bring about positive change that results in improved student learning at your school or district. Bring to mind the schools described in the “Promises Kept” article and think about the commitments you would like to be able to make to students. What positive influence do you want to bring to students and colleagues to promote effective and powerful learning and collaboration at your school and in your district?

Submit a summary of the main ideas and insights that you gained about professional learning by meeting with your learning team, including areas of strength and those that need improvement. Then, state your learning goals for this course based on what you and your learning team perceive to be the needs of your school/district. Explain how your professional learning will ultimately benefit the students at your school/district and share two or more commitments you will make to students.

Critically evaluate 3 different methods of treating generalised anxiety disorders

In order to adequately address this topic you will need to review some recent literature on generalised anxiety disorder, evaluate the effectiveness of different
methods that have been used to treat this condition, and draw some conclusions about the best or most promising methods.
A number of treatment approaches are available for generalised anxiety disorder, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, medication and other therapies. In this essay you must critically evaluate three different methods for treating people with generalised anxiety disorder.
Note: All the literature that you need to consult and critique for your essay has been provided as readings which you can access under the Useful links tab at the top of your study desk (see Course readings – Direct). You are to use those readings and any information about generalised anxiety disorder that is in your textbook (Burton, Westen, & Kowalski, 2015).
Introduction
You must begin with one introductory paragraph of approximately 100–150 words. You should define your main terms, mention the prevalence of generalised anxiety disorder , outline the symptoms and consequences of generalised anxiety disorder , give a rationale for the essay topic, state the treatments you will be evaluating, and give the reader an indication of what you will be arguing.
Essay body
In the main body of the essay, you present the information that has a bearing on your argument. There are many ways of going about this section. However, the most important thing is that you have a well-developed and balanced argument that addresses the exact topic.
Your argument should be so clear, that by the time the reader gets to the end of the body, he or she should already know what you will be concluding. In discussing the different articles, you will need to strike a balance between describing everything in graphic detail and giving so little detail that the reader is not clear what was involved in the studies.
As noted earlier, you do not necessarily have to mention every reading in detail. You may find that you will only want to make brief mention of some studies, while describing others in more detail. However, be sure to cite at least five articles and cover three treatments.
The next two sections show you how to use the information summarised in your grid matrix to critically evaluate the different treatments for major depressive disorder.
How to critically evaluate
In the body of your essay you should develop the ideas outlined in the introduction. You must develop your point of view in a logical manner. Be sure to present a balanced argument that follows from the ideas, theories, and findings that you presented in the introductory paragraph.
For instance, some treatments may have advantages and disadvantages. If so, be sure to mention both. You need to describe the different treatments and to comment on the key points that support your position. You need to also comment on any possible weaknesses or shortcomings of the studies. Compare and contrast the results of a poorly designed study against those obtained from a study that has placed a number of controls in place to ensure the validity of the results.
In this essay, it is important that you critically evaluate the different treatments and studies rather than just describe them. Provide comment on what the different findings suggest or show. Some description will be necessary so that the reader understands the treatment you are talking about, but you must go beyond this. You should consider questions such as the following:
● What were the main benefits of the treatment?
● Was the treatment effective in the short-term? In the long term?
● How does it compare with other treatments in terms of effectiveness?
● Are there any negative features (e.g. side-effects) of the treatment?
● Are there any alternative explanations of the findings?
● Is there a methodological flaw in the research design that could limit the generalisability of the results?
● Is more research needed before definite conclusions can be drawn regarding the effectiveness of different treatments?
● Were the treatment outcomes consistent with the overall aim of treatment?

Please note that not all articles will specifically address each of these questions. They are merely intended to give you some guidance as to the sorts of things you should consider. Do not feel that you have to include everything. Try to provide at least two or more advantages and disadvantages for each treatment and study critiqued.
Critical thinking
It is vital in scientific writing such as this essay to differentiate between your personal opinion on a topic, what you believe the scientific evidence to be on a topic, and what the actual scientific evidence actually is on a topic. In this essay, it is important that you cite research evidence that supports the argument you are making.
You may already hold an opinion about what are acceptable treatments for generalised anxiety disorder. If so, I want you to put your opinions on hold while you read the articles in this course. Do not just look for information that supports your viewpoint. You should also consider research evidence that contradicts it and assess whether there is more evidence for another viewpoint than for your own. A useful exercise is to hold a mock debate about your viewpoint.
For example, if you are opposed to pharmacological intervention, imagine yourself taking the opposite position in a debate. Or get a friend or family member to actually take the opposite side in a debate. Even if they have not read the material, they may be able to challenge your position and force you to find evidence to support it.
Basically, I do not mind what conclusion you come to in the essay, provided that it is backed up by research evidence. Make sure that you fairly evaluate contrary research evidence when developing your argument. Remember: you do not need to like the conclusion you make!
Conclusion
After evaluating the different treatments, it is important that you come to a definite conclusion. Based on the articles you have critiqued, which seem to be the most effective or promising methods for treating generalised anxiety disorder? You might find that one or two methods are consistently effective or you might recommend a treatment ‘package’. More research may also be needed to determine the usefulness of some treatments. It does not matter which treatment you recommend in your conclusion, as long as your conclusion flows on logically from the body of your essay and is supported by research evidence.
Your concluding paragraph should be approximately 100–150 words.
Marking criteria – Important, read this
I will use a copy of the marking criteria to assign marks to your essay so use it as a scaffold or checklist when you are reading articles and writing your essay.
Title of essay
You do not have to think of your own title. Simply call the essay “A Critical Evaluation of Three Different Methods for Treating generalised anxiety disorder”.
