Specific Instructions – Worship Services

For this assignment you are to attend at least one worship service in two of the four religious traditions we will examine this semester (Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Baha’i). After you attend the two services, you are to write a short paper that compares and contrasts the experience of worship at the two places.

·You may attend worship services with any Mormon, Seventh Day Adventist, Jehovah’s Witnesses, or Baha’i communities (i.e., you don’t have to attend services in Spartanburg, if you don’t want to)

·While attending the worship services, you should pay careful attention to the particular worship “atmosphere” (for example, the architecture, “decorations,” the structure of the worship service, or the lack thereof, the mood of worship, what elements are central to service [song, prayer, recitation, sermon, rituals, etc.], religious symbolism that is evident, the makeup of the congregation, and so forth).

· The paper should be a discussion of the experience of worship at the two places and a comparison of the services’ similarities and differences. The best papers will not simply consist of a list of loosely connected observations, but will have a distinct narrative logic that provides structure to the specific points of comparison and contrast that the paper discusses.

· Your discussion of the two worship services should be descriptive and not evaluative (i.e., you should describe what you see, not give your opinion about the validity or merits of what you see).
