Social Theory

1. Purpose:
demonstrate your understanding of and critical engagement with — classical social theorists in relation to the question of modernity.

2. Minor Essay Topic: Making Sense of Modernity: Classical Perspectives
Choose two or three of the essential readings (you may also use the Delanty reading, and one of the classical social theorists (Marx, Weber or Durkheim).

Your essay needs to respond to the following questions:
1. I will provide the readings: According to the Week 3 readings, what were the key aspects of modernity, and why was these important for classical social theory?
2. What was your chosen classical social theorists interpretation of modernity?
3. To what extent does the social theorists interpretation of modernity align with the key arguments of the week 3 readings? To what extend do you agree with the classical social theorists view of modernity? What critique would you bring to bear on his thought?

4. Essay Criteria:
 Please note that the assessment criteria below are not weighted equally

i. How well did the candidate respond to the essay question overall(eg relevance, appropriate use of examples or concrete contexts, originality)?
ii. How well did the student demonstrate comprehension of and critical engagement with relevant key concepts, debates, and arguments?
iii. How well did the student develop a coherent argument?
iv. How well did the student structure and organize his/her essay?
v. How well and to what extent — did the student:
a. Draw on and engage with relevant primary sources
b. Engage with appropriate essential readingsfrom the topic guide (this is related to the above criterion).
c. Demonstrate evidence of Independent Research
vi. Was the essay written with clarity and elegance of expression? This includes spelling and grammar.
vii. How well did the student demonstrate his/her referencing skills:
a. In the body of the essay
b. In thereference list

5. You will need to:
 Provide a reference list, not a bibliography.
 Not to use sub-headings!
 Use appropriate formal (not conversational) English.
 Use Harvard Referencing
 Use first or third person voice (either is fine). But dont use the plural first person voice ie We.
 Provide a word count of your essay (excluding your reference list).

6. Here is a guide to help you structure your essay:
 The rule of thumb is that the introduction and the conclusion are each about 10% of the essay (so approx. 20% in total).
o The introduction should provide background context for the essay. It should also include an articulation of how you will organize your essay, and a summary of the argument that you will develop.
o For this essay, your conclusion is the place where you respond to the third part of the essay question (see previous page), as well as a summary of your argument and your overall conclusion. If your conclusion went over 10% (eg 15% or 20%), that would be fine in this instance.
 About 45-50% of your essay should focus on your engagement with the classical social theorists work.
 This leaves about 25-30% for your engagement with the Week 3 readings.
 These are not hard and fast rules, so dont stress out if your own essay is a bit different, but it gives a good indication of appropriate weightings for each part of the essay.

7. Here are some tips to write a better essay:
 Direct quotations are like jewels use them sparingly. Its often better to summarize the key point at hand in your own words, so that you can demonstrate comprehension of the arguments. All quotations do is demonstrate that you can quote!
 Dont number references in your reference list. The marker can count.
 Do organize your reference list alphabetically.
 When referring to decades as a noun, it is the 1970s and the 1890s not the 1970s and the 1890s.
 Its and its are different. Its means it is, whereas its is a possessive pronoun. e.g.:Its about time (i.e. it is about time). The apostrophe indicates the word is has been abbreviated.Poststructuralism is known for its complexity (the complexity is a quality of the poststructuralism). A tip: if you can replace its with it is, there should be an apostrophe. For example, its about time makes sense as it is about time, but poststructuralism is known for its complexity does not make sense as poststructuralism is known for it is complexity; therefore, no apostrophe.
 Always prof (oops) proof read! You will get a better mark.
 Dont use informal language like: Dont, its, youre, etc., theyd. Use whole words.
 Dont use informal or colloquial speech: shy away from, measuring stick, Here we have an example of. An academic essay is a piece of formal writing.
 Dont have a sentence in which the only words belong to another author. It never looks good. e.g.:Identity is relational, meaning that is not inside a person but that it inheres in the relations between a person and others (Currie 1998:17).Try this:Currie (1998:17) suggests, identity is relational, meaning that is not inside a person but that it inheres in the relations between a person and others.
 In your reference list only include the books and articles which you cite and have read yourself. Dont include works cited by others.
 Never include the lecturers words unless s/he has specifically told you where the words come from.
 Never just string quotes and paraphrases together. Your argument should drive the essay.
 Dont use phrases like: Hopefully I will; Ill try. Be decisive in your writing. For example: In this essay, I demonstrate how modern social theory has reached its limits. (Note also, no apostrophe in its!)
 Use I instead of we. The reader isnt the author. For example: In this essay, I explore how masculinity is in crisis

project deadline 1

On this deadline in Week 7 you must submit:
– evidence of significant advance (1000 words equivalent) towards your project final product presented in a form appropriate to the stage of development, plus
– a 500-word exegesis (a statement commenting on your practical and theoretical processes and intentions – see Guidelines below)

GUIDELINES FOR EXEGESES AND SEMINAR/WORKSHOP PRESENTATIONS
In this course you are asked to write exegeses in support of your creative project submissions. Your seminar presentation is an exegetical exercise too. It will be assessed on its exegetical value.
In providing an exegesis, a practitioner gives an account of the thinking behind a creative work, and may also state a rationale for the work. The exegesis is the practitioner’s own critique of the practice and theory that has gone into the work, and is the practitioner’s setting of the work into the cultural context as the practitioner sees it, or has researched it.
An exegesis is valuable when it thoughtfully and perceptively contextualises the practitioner’s creative work.
Contexts pertinent to the making of a creative work include:
the cultural context – issues relevant to the culture’s current shape and future development, e.g. how people think about certain ideas, ideals, others, themselves, public institutions, private perceptions, etc, etc. The cultural context includes the other contexts listed below;
the theoretical context – academic theories and discourses that might help the work develop or provide standpoints for critique of the work, e.g. postmodern theory, gender theory, perception theory, narratology theory, or even (as low-grade theory) how-to-do-it books, etc;
the historical context – ideas or creative products generated in the past but relevant to the creation of the present work;
the genre and industry contexts – what’s going on elsewhere in the genre or in other artform areas relevant to the product; what’s happening in relevant arts industries in terms of trends, focuses, standards, controversies, technological developments, etc;
the personal context – the practitioner’s own development, perceptions, theorising that establishes a subjective foundation of thinking for one’s practice.
An exegesis should include detailed reference to one or a number of the above contexts. Typical ways of writing an exegesis include quoting from, and making an argument based on, primary and secondary source texts related to the above contexts, alongside your own considered viewpoint as practitioner.
MANUSCRIPT PRESENTATION GUIDELINES
For best results in terms of presentation, manuscripts submitted to publishers, magazines or competitions should comply with the following:
§ be word processed );
§ be free of grammatical, spelling and typographical errors;
§ be introduced by a title page showing title of work, and name, address, email and phone/fax number of writer;

§ be set out with generous margins (2.5cm) on both left and right sides;
§ have numbered pages (extremely important for editing reference purposes);
§ have the writer’s name on each page (and if more than one MS submitted, have title on each page too) – this can be done as a header or footer;
§ comply with the appropriate presentational guidelines if such are given by a competition, magazine, etc;
§ be simply presented without distracting flourishes;
WITH RESPECT TO EXPERIMENTAL WRITING SUBMISSIONS THIS SEMESTER, CONVENTIONAL ELEMENTS OF MANUSCRIPTS MUST COMPLY WITH THE ABOVE. OTHER, MORE RADICAL FORMS OF PRESENTATION, MAY BE REQUIRED FOR SOME SUBMISSIONS.

Research essay plan

Value: 10%
Due date: Friday 24th April
The research essay plan is intended to provide structure for the research essay due at the end of the semester. The plan should include an outline of the topics that will be covered in the essay, where in the essay each topic will be located, as well as at least 8 references in total relevant to the topics. Students will receive feedback on their essay plan in time to help complete their final research essay.

What you need to include in the essay plan:
• 8 topic sentences
• At least one reference per topic sentence
• Bibliography

Essay questions:
• Police history – Australian policing remains strongly influenced by our colonial history. Do you think this is true?
• Police training and culture – Improved police training offers the best way to address police misconduct. Do you agree?
• Policing strategies – Zero tolerance policing is often spoken of by politicians and media commentators as a favourable strategy in reducing crime. Why is this and does scholarly research support such claims?
• Weapons and the use of force – Electronic stun devices and other ‘less-lethal’ weapons are marketed as offering unmitigated benefits to both police and public safety. Are these claims valid? What are the problems associated with the use of these devices?
• Corruption and accountability – Why are drug squads regularly implicated in instances of corruption? What can police leaders do to reduce the risk of corruption in these units?

What to do:
1) Decide on a research question (listed above). This will most likely be in the area that you selected for the paper summary assessment. If you want to change and select a question from one of the other listed research areas that is fine also.

2) Brainstorm some ideas. This involves writing down as many different ideas, theories, concepts and examples that relate to your chosen essay question as possible. You have already completed some preliminary research into your topic as part of your paper summary and review, so there should be some ideas floating around your head already. Don’t rule anything out at this stage. You are not submitting this stuff – the point here is to get as many different ideas down as possible.

3) Research! Get some promising books out of the library and search online databases for relevant sources. Read, take notes and think critically about the information and ideas you are engaging with. Are they convincing? Why/why not? Note that this is a research exercise – as such you may use references from the set reading list and course textbook but these will not count towards the minimum 8 references required.

4) Start arranging your ideas into a coherent narrative. This means selecting those ideas that best illustrate how you think of and understand your topic. Pick those that seem the most relevant and important in constructing an argument and shedding light on your essay question.

5) Identify the main points that will comprise your argument. These should include what policing theories/concepts (e.g. colonial policing, broken windows theory, etc.) you will be discussing and how they relate to your essay question. All of your main points should be relevant to the essay question.

6) Use your main points to write at least 8 topic sentences. Topic sentences are statements of the main ideas that you intend to explain in your essay. They are the claims that support your argument, and usually are used as the opening sentence in each paragraph. The purpose of the remainder of the paragraph is to back up and elaborate upon the topic sentence.
Examples of topic sentences include:
• Community policing is popular but also vague and difficult to define.

• Resistance to community policing initiatives may come from officers working within police forces.
• There are a number of reasons why community policing may improve police-public relations.

7) Following each topic sentence, briefly indicate what research you are going to use to demonstrate your point. Include a reference to at least one scholarly source.
Examples:
Topic sentence: Community policing is popular but also vague and difficult to define.

Evidence/research: To demonstrate this point I plan to compare different definitions of community policing from Martin (2012) and Skolnick (2005).

• Topic sentence: The effectiveness of community policing is much debated amongst policing scholars.
• Evidence/research: References will be made to a case study looking at community policing in the United States from Brogden (2008) in order to demonstrate potential positive outcomes.

8) List each reference in the bibliography.

Important things to remember:
• Remember to use proper SAGE Harvard formatting for your bibliography.
• Read the rubric! It contains all of the information that will be used by markers to assess your work.
• You are not beholden to the ideas you present. The purpose of this assessment is to get you thinking methodically about your topic. Your ideas will probably change as you start writing and researching in depth.
• That being said, this is also an opportunity to get feedback about your plan and proposed approach to the topic. Also you are being assessed so submit something worthwhile!

HOW CAN SMALL DESTINATIONS WITH LOW LEVEL BRAND AWARENESS AND VAGUE DESTINATION IMAGE INCREASE THEIR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES IN TERMS OF BRANDING?

The subject area of this essay is MARKETING however my course is TOURISM, therefore the essay lies between two of the subject areas.
Minimum 10 relevant up to date academic journal articles must be used. it is really important to SYNTHESISE them/compare them in the essay, rather than just writing source by source.
Please try to use these sources:

Journal articles are the most important sources to use! If you need help please contact me…
The essay is focusing on destination image & brand awareness. How small destinations (in size) such as islands, that have low level brand awareness and image increase their competitive advantages in terms of branding.
It will be great to use theoretical models of destination branding, and compare and contrast the different sources!

The Role of the Human Resource Manager in today’s business world

This project is an opportunity for you to personalize the concepts you are learning in this course. The topics must be in the field of HRM or some application (e.g., an application of course concepts to your work situation; a research paper, using a survey/questionnaire to investigate a concept of interest and value; a detailed review of the literature about a concept from the course).

You must follow the format below for your term project report:
1.Title: The title is a concise statement of the subject of the paper.
2.Abstract: The abstract is an “executive overview” of your paper. It should be a 50-to-l00 word summary that would be appropriate to give your manager so that he/she would know the essence of your project without reading the paper in its entirety..
3.Table of Contents: In this section, list each section of your paper, with the page number. The list should include: ◦Tables and Figures if you included more than two;.
◦Appendices, if included;.
◦Bibliography or reference section listing sources used..
.
4.Introduction: In this section, state the purpose of the paper in succinct, declarative sentences. Convince your reader that the study will have a practical value and meaning for you and the study will be based upon the concepts studied in the course..
5.Background and Significance: This section provides further justification of the need for your study. If your project examines a topic drawn from your work, you should include a description of your work environment, your position in the organization and how your position fits into the organization, both vertically and horizontally. Explain the applicable concepts from the course. If your project is focused on a particular organization, explain how these concepts apply to that organization. What is the organization doing well? Would it benefit by adopting some of the concepts you have been studying?.
6.Discussion, Implications and Recommendations: In this section, you should provide a thorough discussion of your findings and the implications of your study. Be sure to include only the pertinent implications. You should also present your recommended action plan. This plan will vary based on the type of project you selected. For example, it may be a personal action plan for you follow in your present position or in a position which would enable you to put the plan into action. If your project is a literature review, then your recommendations may be focused on what issues need further research. Be sure that the recommendations are realistic in terms of the appropriate HR concepts and, if applicable, the organization you have studied..
7.References: You cannot use your texts as your primary source of information. You must draw on other sources such as HR and business journals, information from an organization, and interviews with individuals who work in an HR position. Be sure that you support the information presented with appropriate references. It is important that all references and quotes correctly are cited correctly. All sources, including web sites must be referenced in the Bibliography or References list. You must follow an accepted authority for style and form (e.g., APA style)..
8.Appendices: Include a separate sheet and title for each appendix..

Keep in mind that all accepted rules of English composition apply. Papers must be typed or word-processed, be double spaced, and have standard margins (1 inch on each side).

The LENGTH of the paper is not the primary measure of the QUALITY of the paper. A paper of 40-50 pages is probably too long for the purposes of this course. On the other hand, the purpose of this assignment cannot be properly satisfied in a paper of only 5 pages! As a guideline, you will probably need about 15 pages to present your research adequately.

Be sure that you cite all references and quotes correctly; all sources used must be referenced in the Bibliography or References section. If you have questions about the format or content of references, discuss it with your instructor.
