Global issue

Portfolio Element Five:

Personal Reaction to a Global Issue

Introduction
We are bombarded with information about global issues each day. We learn about these issues in many ways, including newspapers, television news, online blogs, and more recently, tweets. Documentaries also act as a way for individuals to present one or more sides of an issue through investigation, interviews, and footage of the places and individuals involved. In this unit, you will write about your personal reaction to a global issue presented in one of the documentaries listed below.

While watching the documentaries, it is important to pay attention not only to the information presented in the video, but also to the information that was left out, ignored, or written off as unimportant. Everyone holds personal biases about issues, and it is important to recognize that directors may not always offer a balanced view of the issue they are presenting. In other words, when watching documentaries it is important to critically analyze what you are watching.

When you critically analyze something, it is useful to pay attention to the following:
1. Context
▪ How is the information being presented?
▪ Are both sides of the issue represented?
▪ Is personal opinion or bias evident?
2. Sources
▪ Is the information provided recent?
▪ Are sources relevant?
▪ Are the sources from different viewpoints, or only one point of view?
3. Publisher
▪ What are the interests of the publisher?
▪ Do they have anything to gain/lose from the content provided?
4. Cause and Effect Relationships
▪ Are cause and effect relationships true, or exaggerated?
Example:John walked down the street at 10pm. At 10:15pm my house was robbed. John robbed my house.
This is not an effective cause and effect relationship because it is based on assumption, not fact.
5. Anecdotes
▪ Anecdotes are personal stories, not fact. Just because one person experienced something, doesn’t mean it is true for everyone.
6. Missing Information
▪ Is there information missing?
▪ Have all sides of the issue been examined?
7. Statistics
▪ Do statistics represent a variety of people from different backgrounds?
Example:If you create a survey asking people their opinions on poverty, but only ask people who make $250,000 a year from one neighbourhood, the responses will be different than if you ask people from various economic classes and neighbourhoods.
▪ Have an appropriate number of people been questioned?
Example:If you only ask 10 people the survey question, the results will not be as accurate as if you ask 1000 people.

Assignment
For this assignment you will submit a 500 word written response summarizing and critically analyzing a documentary of your choice. The following documentaries are only suggestions. If you find a documentary on another global issue that is of more interest to you, you may write your assignment based on it, pending your instructor’s approval. This assignment will make up part of your personal global awareness portfolio. Therefore, it is important that you choose an issue that is of interest, or perhaps has personally affected you, your family, or a friend. If you are an international student, you may wish to choose an issue that is affecting your country. Some alternative suggestions are documentaries relating to: natural resources (water, oil, renewable energy), political instability, global health epidemics, global warming, corruption, electoral practices, land ownership, military issues, etc.

Make sure your response:
▪ Briefly summarizes the main ideas and arguments presented in your chosen documentary
▪ Critically analyzes the video (i.e. what was left out, ignored, what biases you noticed, etc.)
o Use the critical analysis suggestions in the introduction to assist you.
▪ Shares your own personal reaction to the global issue presented in the documentary

It is strongly recommended that you leave yourself enough time to locate the documentary required for this assignment. It is also strongly recommended that you use additional internet research to familiarize yourself with the global issue you have selected.

Assessment 1: Topic Nursing care of a person with altered cardiovascular function
Sylvie is in your patient allocation today.
Shift handover: Sylvie
Sylvie a 32 year old woman with a long history of cardiac and other health problems and surgery, mainly related to congenital heart anomalies associated with Down Syndrome. She was admitted yesterday afternoon via the Cardiac Outpatient Clinic following a referral by her local GP for a review of her cardiac status.
On admission Sylvie was dyspnoeic, tachycardic, peripherally cyanotic and easily fatigued. She also had peripheral oedema and some central cyanosis. Oxygen @2Litres/min via nasal prongs was commenced in the outpatient clinic and has continued since admission. Sylvie reports an increased weight gain over the last few weeks despite not eating well. She also reports being too tired and breathless to shop and cook for herself. Sylvie states she has been taking her medications as prescribed but admits to being a bit confused and forgetful lately.
Overnight her observations have been stable but she remains dyspnoeic and tachycardic. This morning her heart rate is 120bpm. Her respiratory rate is within normal limits but she has nasal flaring, tracheal tug and some intercostal recession. Pulse oximetry is borderline with nasal prong oxygen and a random capillary venous blood gas overnight indicated a mixed metabolic and respiratory acidosis with the PaO2 at the lower end of normal range. She hasn’t reported any chest pain since admission. Peripheral oedema is still present and, this morning, her weight is unchanged from her admission weight.
Current medications include an ACE inhibitor, diuretic, a cardiac glycoside, a beta-adrenergic blocker, glycerine trinitrate and prn analgesia. She also has an IV cannula in situ requiring 6/24 saline flushes. Sylvie has been living independently with good family and community support for the last year or so. She is really worried that this current episode might put that in jeopardy. Sylvie’s parents came in last night and are quite worried about Sylvie’s condition. They would like to speak with the Cardiac Consultant when they come in this morning. They were going to check Sylvie’s place on their way home last night and pick up some clothes, care items and other things Sylvie wanted to have with her.
NUR250 Medical Surgical Nursing 1: Assessment 1 Topic and Tasks S1 2015 7

Part 2 Regulatory review

Format guidelines: I anticipate these will range between five and eight double-spaced pages using 11 or 12pt font with one-inch margins. Again, page-limits should be viewed as guidelines. I am looking for well-organized and compact pieces. Please do not hesitate to ask me if you have any questions regarding this assignment.

Management Plans

Often unforeseen problems–such as the tragic Gulf Oil Spill, intensify the need to understand ethics which incorporate economic realities. Knowing important aspects of change and having an inclusive—more whole- ethical stance will support your staff while empowering you as a leader. Critical Questions to consider for Conference 5: What should be done to improve planning to include external factors, such as the environment of that business strategy, for what’s ethical or not? Should major management plans provide for “worst case scenario” to assist development of ethics? As a manager how can you deal with different ethical ideas, especially for a range of diverse values and viewpoints? How might you begin increasing ethical practices within a diverse work group?

proposal to the Ford Foundation to support the work of Anti-Slavery International

The paper takes the form of a proposal to the Ford Foundation to support the work of a humanitarian non-governmental organization (NGO) In this case Anti-Slavery International, . According to its website, the Ford Foundation’s goals “are to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement.”

-The GOAL, is to write a proposal that requests funding from the Ford Foundation to support a project within the NGO’s mission (Anti-Slavery International). The paper should describe the work of Anti-Slavery International as well as make arguments about why its
work is crucial to world politics and the Ford Foundation’s goals, Human rights and ending modern day slavery in this case.

-ALL arguments must be backed up with specific evidence from relevant research. ( some of which will be provided but feel free to use other relevant articles/journals if they are good enough)

Use the Ford Foundations website to define their mission statement and why the NGO fits their goals :

http://www.fordfoundation.org/about-us/mission

http://www.fordfoundation.org/issues/human-rights (Human Rights Page)

these are specific pages, but all info on the whole site is fair game.

The NGO: Anti-Slavery International

http://www.antislavery.org/english/

http://www.antislavery.org/english/what_we_do/default.aspx

Use the attached documents to build the argument on why NGO’s are essential to global governance and build the case for human rights and the organizations role in strengtening human rights (and this is why the ford foundation should fund it). One of the articles talks about how treaties and international organizations like the UN are failing when it comes to human rights, USE THIS, this is why our role in global governance in ending modern day slavery , a huge human rights issue, is so important

Ultimately this is why we need funding:

Argument should be centered on our roles and specific actions (which can be found on website) as an organizations as relevant to NGOs and global governance as a whole

Again ! it is essential the sources provided are used in the argument, relevant to the organizations role in the world

phase 3 individual Project

Weekly tasks or assignments (Individual or Group Projects) will be due by Monday and late submissions will be assigned a late penalty in accordance with the late penalty policy found in the syllabus. NOTE: All submission posting times are based on midnight Central Time.

For your third Individual Project, you will be writing an essay of 1,000 words or more about two additional poems from the assigned reading list. Please select two works from the list of fifteen—excluding the one you already reflected on in Part A of the Phase 3 DB assignment—and answer the questions below. Again, be sure to begin your paper with an engaging introduction and clear thesis statement, develop each point in the body of your paper using examples and quotes from the poems, and conclude your paper with a restatement of your thesis and closing remarks. Also, make sure you maintain your credibility by including in-text citations and a reference list correctly formatted in APA style.
1.Imagery: What visual images can you identify in both poems? Comment on the details you notice about objects, places, people, colors, textures and so forth. Which of your other senses are stimulated by the poets’ descriptions?
2.Figures of Speech: List the specific metaphors, similes, puns and other figures of speech each poet uses and how they contribute to the poem’s overall meaning. (Remember, figurative language is not literal but rather suggestive of something else. For example, the metaphor, “Jack is a pig,” is not a reference to an actual animal with hooves but rather someone named Jack who has pig-like qualities or mannerisms.)
3.Symbolism: Identify the symbols you notice in each poem. What abstract concepts (e.g., love, death, truth) might the concrete objects (e.g., persons, places, things) suggest?
4.Language and Word Choice: Every word in a poem has been included (or left out) after much deliberation, as poets choose their words very carefully. Remark on the following in each poem: Does the poet use informal or formal language? Does he or she write in an older dialect or contemporary English? Provide examples.
5.Tone: What tone does each poet take (e.g., sad, humorous, sarcastic, loving, etc.) toward his or her subject matter?
6.Themes: What are the main messages of both poems? Give reasons for your answers.
7.Sound: Read both poems aloud. What do you notice about their rhythms, rhyme schemes and musicality? How does listening to the sound of a poem differ from merely reading it as words on a page?
8.Final Thoughts: Poetry can enlighten and/or evoke deep emotion in readers. Express the impact each of the two poems you have analyzed for this assignment had on you. What insights did you gain about life or human nature, and what feelings did each piece stir in you? Has your view of poetry changed in any way since reading and analyzing the Phase 3 poems? Explain your answer

Ecological Analysis of an Adult Paper

Ecological Analysis of an Adult Paper

Assignment:
The purpose of the paper is to interview an adult from a different ethnic, racial, or cultural group than you and to assess the individual, his/her environment, and the effects of the interaction between the individual and his/her environment. The person cannot be related to you and is not to be a student or professional from OLLU. I also strongly recommend that you do not interview any individuals with whom you have a personal or familial relationship.

The interview should last for at least 45 minutes. Treat this as an open-ended interview, letting the person tell her or his story. Your interview notes will provide the material for the paper.

When you invite the person to interview with you, assure her or him that whatever is said will be confidential and that only you and your professor will see your words.Tell the person that her or his real name will not be used to protect the interviewee’s privacy. Tell the interviewee that she or he has the right to refuse to answer any question you ask and that participation is voluntary. Additionally, you are required to inform the interviewee of the limitations of confidentiality.

You are expected to demonstrate critical thinking skills, utilize at least five peer reviewed literature resources, and apply APA guidelines correctly.

Drawing on relevant theories, perspectives and models (e.g. development, ecological systems, transactional, strengths perspective), the readings, outside references, and class discussion, write a double-spaced, properly referenced (minimum of five references), 7-to-8-page paper (excluding title and reference page) that includes the following content:
1.Place the individual within her or his context by discussing important information about the person, her or his multiple identities, (e.g. parent, professional, caregiver, etc.), background, current context, important family members and other relationships, strengths and struggles, etc. Discuss current developmental tasks the individual is negotiating. The purpose of this introductory section is to demonstrate that you have developed a very good sense of who this person is.
2.Describe and analyze in a culturally sensitive manner the physical, cognitive, moral, social (family, intimates, and peers), emotional/affective and spiritual domains by applying appropriate theories. Pay attention to the person’s multiple roles and identities within those roles.
3.Describe the ecological/cultural contexts in which the person lives (e.g. class, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.), expounding on the strengths and resiliencies drawn from that culture as well as any oppressions being experienced by the person.
4.Include a brief, summary discussion of the individual and systematic factors that have shaped this person’s life, the challenges or “issues” he or she currently faces, and how you think the person will navigate the current challenge(s).
5.At the end of this more formal analysis, write a paragraph or two commenting on your experience of doing this assignment and describe how your cultural lens affected your observation and analysis.
6.Include in the Appendix an eco-map of the individual’s system (see Chapter 5 of Kirst-Ashman & Hull) and a genogram. Be clear, concrete, and concise in using these tools as a means of visually depicting the client.

Note: In completing this interview, please refer to page # 175 of Kirst-Ashman & Hull in order to plan for safety. DO NOT CONDUCT AN INTERVIEW WITH SOMEONE THREATENING OR IN A PLACE THAT IS UNSAFE.

Suggested Guidelines for Writing
•A good assessment/analysis of a person is like a good storyline in a book. It is easy to read, has a sense of movement to it, makes sense when considering the person, and brings insight to the reader and life to the person being assessed.
•What theory or theories do you find helpful in light of your observation? If several theories seem helpful or parts of several are helpful, use more than one and discuss the differences. You may find yourself having a dialogue between two or more theories as you try to understand the person and his or her interaction with the environment. A caution—one is not able to prove or disprove a theory on the basis of a singular observation; so you will discuss the helpfulness or limitations of one or more theories but your observations will not ‘prove’ or ‘disprove’ any one theory.
•The theories should be woven into your paper, not just listed, and should be used to support your interpretations. Theories are meant to bring greater insight to a person’s behaviors, feelings, cognitions, etc. If they are not doing so, you may not be applying them correctly. Do not feel as if you have to “teach” the theory. Simply apply it to the person as appropriate.
•Concrete examples should be used throughout the paper to illustrate your points. It is not enough to say that the person is a given age and therefore should be attending to specific milestones. Instead, give examples of types of behaviors in the person that support your theses. The paper should grow out of your observations.
•Credit authors and other sources appropriately (APA style). At the end of the paper there should be a reference page, alphabetically listing only the books or articles cited in the text of the paper.
•Remember that you are the expert. If you do not know the information, it is your responsibility to find it.
•Understanding another person is a process that evolves through “dwelling within” the experience of that person. It will help if you leave enough time to write a rough draft because the process of writing that rough draft will allow for the process of “dwelling in.” You will then have time to add insights gained through this process
