Persuasive essay

MAN 4350-5351: Staffing, Training & Development
Research Summary & Rubric

OVERVIEW
Each student will complete a newsletter-style summary of an academic, peer-reviewed journal article related to the course. A sample will be provided. The purpose of this project is to give students an opportunity to critically review the latest research on a staffing topic of interest. Students will also gain experience in writing a concise summary of research in a format that is ideal for sharing with a management team and for persuading them regarding the chosen topic.

4350 SPECIFICATIONS
Select a peer-reviewed, academic article on a topic directly related to staffing. The article must be from 2011 or later. Submit a PDF of the article via the Dropbox on eLearning by 6 PM on Thursday, 1/22, for preapproval.
• Summary should be a minimum of 800 words and a maximum of 1,200 words (excluding page numbers, title, references, figures, tables, etc.).
• Format the summary using a creative, newsletter style per student choice. Make the document visually appealing to stimulate and maintain reader interest.
• Structure the summary appropriately based on your article (see the sample).
• The article should be read, critically analyzed, and summarized to build a persuasive, convincing case to your management team regarding this topic. What do you want them to learn about this topic? What should the organization do in light of this information? What are the implications of this information for organizations?
• Use proper quoting (APA style). Any phrase of four words or more taken directly from the source must be quoted with the page number given! Paraphrasing does not require citations for this assignment since a single article is being summarized (for undergraduates). PLEASE NOTE: rearranging words in a sentence or replacing every few words in a sentence is not paraphrasing—it’s plagiarism. ALSO NOTE: Any quotes that are used should have major impact or some wow factor. Undergraduate students should not use more than two quotes in the summary.

5351 SPECIFICATIONS
For the pre-approval, select two peer-reviewed, academic articles on a topic directly related to a current staffing trend, issue, or best practice. These articles must be from 2011 or later. Submit PDFs of the articles via the Dropbox on eLearning by 6 PM on Thursday, 1/22, for preapproval. Briefly explain your topic in the Dropbox submission window.
• Summary must include a minimum of five academic, peer-reviewed sources from 2008 or later (at least two from 2011 or later). The summary should include the theoretical foundation/basis for your topic.
• Summary should be a minimum of 1,500 words and a maximum of 2,000 words (excluding page numbers, title, references, figures, tables, etc.).
• Format the summary using a creative, newsletter style per student choice. Make the document visually appealing to stimulate and maintain reader interest.
• Structure the summary appropriately based on your article (see the sample).
• The sources must be critically analyzed and integrated into a summary that builds a persuasive, convincing case to your management team regarding this topic. What do you want them to learn about this topic? What actions should the organization take in light of this information? What are the implications of this information for your organization?
• Use proper quoting (APA style). Any phrase of four words or more taken directly from the source must be quoted with the page number given! Paraphrasing does not require citations for this assignment since a single article is being summarized (for undergraduates). PLEASE NOTE: rearranging words in a sentence or replacing every few words in a sentence is not paraphrasing—it’s plagiarism.
